2006 Best Of The Bay: A Vision Of The Future

THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN'S BEST OF THE BAY 2006 PARTY

View The Invite

In 1974, the San Francisco Bay Guardian pioneered the concept of the "Best of..." issue, which showcases the diverse offerings of the Bay Area. Now in its 32nd incarnation, the Guardian's Best of the Bay issue looks to visions of a city of the future. And to mark this unique and forward-thinking publication, and to celebrate our 40th anniversary of publication, the Guardian is mounting its most astonishing public event to date!

Once again, the spectacular diversity of the Bay Area's talent pool is brought together to honor the winners of our Best of the Bay awards. In keeping with the Guardian's reputation of foreseeing the next waves in arts, entertainment and culture, we've assembled a stellar lineup of underground, cutting-edge and established performers and artists: Zion I, Extra Action Marching Band, Erase Errata, Scissors for Lefty, Numbers, Yikes! (with John Dwyer of The Coachwhips), Radio Active, Sellassie, DJ Omar (Fake) and DJ Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist (True Skool.)

In addition, an exclusive art show titled "Futuristic/Fantastic" will present the works of emerging artists, curated by a rising star on the art scene, Dina Pugh of Triple Base Gallery.

Following a private party held for the Guardian's Best of the Bay 2006 winners, the public can join in the celebration at Club Six (60 Sixth St between Market & Mission) in San Francisco. We hope to see you there.

ABOUT THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN

Since 1966, the San Francisco Bay Guardian has been printing the news and raising hell as the Bay Area's independent, locally-owned & edited newspaper. With fearless investigative reporting of local, national and international politics and issues; extensive arts & entertainment coverage; a revamped website with exclusive content, buzzworthy blogs and greater reader interactivity; and the pioneering, annual "Best of the Bay" issue, the Guardian is currently celebrating its 40th Anniversary as the nation's #1 independent alt-weekly.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

ZION I

Zion I is Oakland’s own organic duo - a heady mix of poetry and politics in MC Zion’s street verse, backed by Amp Live’s exotic beats and sitar, soul, and drum and bass samplings.

SCISSORS FOR LEFTY

Indie synth-pop sensations Scissors for Lefty bring back the bardic tradition, blending pop hooks and dance-y beats with lyrics about San Franciscan adventures and their own musical evolution.

ERASE ERRATA

Thrillingly dancepunk, Erase Errata illuminates the stage with the kind of energy that puts old-guard riot grrls to shame. Exuberant rhythms and jittery vocals throw suave head-bobbing out the window in favor of infectious dancefloor domination, and EE’s musical precision seems to indicate that punk rock is alive and thriving in San Francisco.

EXTRA ACTION MARCHING BAND

After an eight year mission of musical lechery in the Bay Area, the Extra Action Marching Band has only grown more riotous. Layering jazz, funk, and marching band antics, this oft-inebriated crew of 30+ will dance you off your feet (sometimes literally) in semi-nude spectacle of freakiness.

T-K.A.S.H.

This political rhymer and guerilla funk prodigy, brings quality music and songwriting to a commercialized industry. He became the talk of Bay Area industry after scoring the hardcore hip-hop documentary Straight Outta Hunters Point, hailed by Murder Dog Magazine as, “…servin’ up heat for real…that’s real talk.”

NUMBERS

"Where once, Numbers were the premier party-rock dance outfit with whom we found our salvation from the curse that was the coming of a new century, now comes Numbers of a new dawning era of self realization and societal enlightenment. Previously three individuals taking turns of yelping, buzzerk-ing, pushing and shoving coming together occasionally to make fight music for pajama parties, now has become a singular sound; an epic, mind-driving sound."

YIKES!

The new band consists of Mike Donovan, Eric Park, and John Dwyer (Coachwhips, Pink and Brown.) Get ready to get down and sweat.

RADIO ACTIVE

Originating from Boston, MA, Radio Active embodies the essence of hip hop life. He is an emcee, beatboxer, writer, and painter. He plays musical instruments, incorporates electronic beats with his beatbox and commands active audience participation during his always fresh, soulful original live performances.

SELLASSIE

A San Francisco native, Sellassie is an alternative in todays hip-hop. He embodies black street culture alongside the revolutionary spirit of the Black Panthers.

DJ OMAR

Another staple in the Bay Area club scene for years, you can catch Omar spinning an eclectic mix of electro, punk rock, new wave, hip-hop, indie, rock 'n' roll dance punk and more at various clubs and parties across the Bay Area.

DJ REN THE VINYL ARCHAEOLOGIST

DJ Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist’s hip-hop night, True Skool, has transformed the SF club landscape from mundane to magic as it presents the cream of international rhyme sayers and beat-slangers.
