"Lil' Giants." The husband-and-wife photographic team Davis and Davis, Denise and Scott Davis, rescue children's toys that have been lost or abandoned, clean them up, and arrange them into still-life scenes that range from goofy to disturbing. On display at the Heather Marx Gallery are about 20 images from their two current series, Childish Things and Family Case Studies. In The Nauts, a piece from the latter series, Davis and Davis hope to make us chuckle at the idea of psychologists at a professional conference discussing the dynamics of a family. Mr. Naut, wearing full astronaut gear, fades into the background of the picture, while his daughter, wearing a pink dress and a battered astronaut helmet, primly stands in front. Maybe it's about overly demanding parental expectations or a child's ambitious delusions of grandeur; Davis and Davis leave it up to us to decide what familial drama (or trauma) these abandoned toys are playing out. "You Ought'a Be in Pictures." Steve DeFrank, Jason Mecier, and Rob Conger are all portraitists, but definitely not the conventional, paint-and-canvas kind. DeFrank specializes in Lite-Brite art; each of his electric portraits uses between 60,000 and 80,000 pegs. His pictures are often funny, often embarrassing, and sometimes both at the same time, like the huge portrait of his parents wearing nothing but their tan lines, wristwatches, and '70s-style hairdos. San Francisco artist Jason Mecier contributes mixed-media portraits of Rod Serling, the Rock, and Linda Blair. Each collage is a collection of objects specially chosen for the subject's personality. The third artist in the show, Rob Conger, rounds out this group of unconventional portraitists with his three hooked rugs: Alan Greenspan, Greenspan Praying, and Greenspan Attentive. Now you too can have the Federal Reserve Board chair warming your toes in the privacy of your own home. Through Sat/2. Pacific Art League of Palo Alto 668 Ramona, Palo Alto; (650) 321-3891.
