Fri/8-Sat/9, Julia Morgan Center for the Arts THE EAST BAY has awakened again. In the '90s we used to get a yearly series that highlighted dance beyond San Francisco. Unfortunately, those programs fell by the wayside when Laney College's splendid little theater, the event's venue, became unavailable. Now energetic young choreographer Katherine Davis has picked up the slack with her new "East Bay Dance Series." Axis Dance Company and Savage Jazz Dance Company, the best-known participants, will show excerpts from their repertory, and other artists will unveil new works, including Learning to Speak, Davis's exploration of shyness; The Ring (on power, bullfighting, and angels), by Nina Haft; and a section from the upcoming Hole (and what can disappear into it), by Kimiko Guthrie's Dandelion Dancetheater. Also on the bill are Mother's Day Variations, by Rebecca Salzer Dance Company, and Pound Foolish, a collaboration by Tanya Calamoneri and Micaela Gardner. The most anticipated piece is an as-yet-untitled work for the Moving Arts Dance Collective by Michael Lowe, probably the East Bay's freshest choreographic voice in some time. 8 p.m., 2640 College, Berk. $12-$15.
