Long live love
By Amanda Nowinski

THIS IS THE dawning of the night of Aquarius. Accordingly, don't expect anyone to show up on time, listen to your problems, or flirt with just one person. Aquarians are notoriously flighty sluts with an eye and ear for the future, so you can expect to have a serious good time this week at Loveworks, a celebration for all three Aquarians involved: DJ Matt Valenz and copromoters Nori Castillo and Dianna Jacobs. Running strong since 1996, Loveworks personifies the old-school S.F. party vibe – completely mixed and full of uplifting disco, funk, and house. Jacobs was an integral part of the early-'90s dance scene and helped throw definitive parties like Carefree and Love Garage (back when the King Street Garage entrance was on a crumbly dirt road), and she was a cofounder of Toon Town, inarguably the city's first aboveground urban rave. So it comes as no surprise that these three know how to turn a booty inside out. Arrive when it suits you, and make sure to check your cynicism at the door.

Sophisticated DJs realize that hammering dancers with one genre at a time is a thing of the past – mixing it up is the only remaining alternative in a somewhat uncertain dance music scene. JP of Forward Thought recently launched a genre fuck-off party called Tapestry at Lingba, a Thai restaurant-cocktail lounge in Pot Hill. JP says you can expect to hear "any form of electronic music, as long as it has soul," from DJs like Dom Some, Wisdom, Scott Edmonds, DJ Seven, Consuelo, and of course, Bed-Sty native JP. Also, don't miss Step, the city's first all-2-step party, which resurfaces this Thursday at the Border Cantina with DJs Dom Some, Enzyme, JP, and guest Monty Luke. Limber lovers are welcome.

Loveworks. Second Saturdays, 10 p.m.-2 a.m., 111 Minna Gallery, S.F. $10. (415) 974-1719, www.loveworksdancing.com.
