'848's 10th Anniversary Celebration'
Fri/22-Sun/24, 848 Community Space

IF YOU FOLLOW political or sporting events, you may not believe that justice exists. But it does, and here's proof: this weekend 848 Community Space celebrates its 10th anniversary. One of those only-in-San-Francisco places, 848 was wild when it started, and it still is; it should never have made it, but it did. Located far from the hip Mission District, the upstairs space was originally a dump that had one asset, a second exit. Its determined advocates hung curtains for doors, painted the walls, installed floors, and bought chairs. Soon they started offering classes, workshops, and show after show after show. Dancers, writers, musicians, activists, and experimental performers all flocked to 848 – and so did audiences. Ticket prices have always included the welcoming footnote "no one turned away for lack of funds." This weekend's party offers themed programs (antiwar, pro-sex, and free expression) each night, with artists from all disciplines, including theater, dance, music, and visual arts, lending their talents for the cause.

8 p.m., 848 Divisadero, S.F. $10-$20 (no one turned away for lack of funds). (415) 922-2385, www.848.com. (Rita Felciano)
