The show goes on: Sighs of relief could be heard from Pacific Heights all the way down to the Inner Mission when the Roxie Cinema delivered $35,000 in back rent to its landlord, David Abecassis, on Friday, April 12. Checks from all over the city, pledges from the likes of Danny Glover, donations of signed Red Rock West posters from Nicolas Cage, and calls offering help from the office of state assemblymember Carole Migden were among the reasons Roxie programmer Elliot Lavine said he was happy when he spoke to me from the box office Monday morning. And yes, they've only paid through March and haven't completely solved that little problem about the electrical contractor's lien on the building for the $18,000 owed, but don't expect the Roxie, the city's oldest operating rep theater, to crumble under pressure ("The Last Picture Show," 4/3/02). Lavine said, "Even though we're still nervous, we feel there are a lot of people on our side. It's certainly nice to get that kind of feeling from the community that we serve." (Susan Gerhard)
