First, the Bad News

WITH THE FOCUS on teen suicide bombers in the Middle East, it's easy to forget the young people who are dying closer to home. But violence is actually the number-one cause of death for Californians age 15 to 24. And a recent survey of San Francisco kids completed as part of the statewide Choices for Youth campaign turned up some statistics likely to frighten any parent.

Thirty-four percent of the kids surveyed by the Homies Organizing the Mission to Empower Youth Project, a Mission-based nonprofit, said they believe they could get a gun if they wanted one. Seventy-one percent said they know another young person who has been a victim of violence – and 47 percent said they know a kid who has died as a result. (Tali Woodward)
