First, the bad news...


CALIFORNIA STUDENTS SHOULD probably start stockpiling number-two pencils now.

Recently, the state Board of Education voted to dump the standardized test California has been using for years and replace it with an exam produced by Education Testing Service. But since education funding is tied to test-score trends, the state needs to find a way to compare new scores with older ones. And officials have a plan: next year some students will be required to take both tests. (Tali Woodward)
