All beat up

By Amanda Nowinski

BORED WITH THE usual? Tired of music that only sounds good after three whiskey sours? Sep, DJ and organizer of Dub Mission, the city's only strictly dub party (Sundays at the Elbo Room), launches a new night of anti-usual entertainment this Thursday at Club Galia called Retinal, a weekly exploration of sound and moving image. The idea is to combine live acoustic players with electronic musicians – sort of like J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science or DJ Fluid's Afro-Mystic. Kyle from Insomnia provides serious visuals, and you can expect to hear the ambient dub sounds of Spectraphonic and "Eastern-style electronic hardcore" from Hypercube on a regular basis. DJs Sep and Sifu and guests will be on rotation.

On Retinal's opening night, filmmaker Joel Fuller previews DeviantRhythms, a documentary that examines the relationship between electronic and traditional musicians. Think the acoustic guys have issues with all you talentless knob twiddlers? But of course. Check out local stars Cheb I Sabbah, John Santos, Andrew Jervis, Tim Witter, Jonah Sharp, and DJ Honey B. The documentary is only half an hour, so there's no excuse for short-attention-spanned clubbers not to attend.

Also on the Sep tip, Ryan Moore (Twilight Circus Dub Sound System) comes to Dub Mission Sun/26 to promote his Dub Plates Volume 3. In his performance Moore will combine bass guitar, dub plates, classic reggae, contemporary dance tracks, and field recordings. Since '81 this Canada-born, Netherlands-based producer has appeared on more than 60 albums and gets special love from DJs like Spooky, Mixmaster Morris, and the Iration Steppas.

Retinal. Thursdays (Thurs/23 with preview of DeviantRhythms), 9:30 p.m.-2 a.m., Club Galia, 2565 Mission, S.F. $6-$7. (415) 970-9777, www.retinalsf.com.

Dub Mission. Sundays (Sun/26 with Ryan Moore), 9 p.m.-2 a.m., Elbo Room, 647 Valencia, S.F. $8-$9. (415) 552-7788, www.dubmissionsf.com.
