First, the bad news...

THE GLAMOROUS WOMEN of HBO's Sex and the City – consumed as they are by luxury footwear and designer drinks – have become the pop culture stand-in for 21st-century single women.

But that's not exactly an accurate image – particularly not in California.

According to new stats from the San Francisco-based Women's Foundation, more than one-third of single women in the state live below the federal poverty level. Nationwide, one out of every four is below that income level, set at $8,860 for 2002. (Tali Woodward)
