By Amanda Nowinski POP AT AN Sibin on Fridays has become one of the city's most reliable techno events and a cozy spot to hear the Broker/Dealer residents play live. This week the production teams hosts Jason Williams, a.k.a. Velocette, from Parallel Recordings, who will also play Sat/6 at Andrew Jervis and Jonah Sharp's Phusion party. Velocette proves that techno can be sexier than a candle-lit bubble bath with Mandy Patinkin OK, maybe not that sexy, but still. Williams began producing in 1994 in San Francisco on Jonah and Billee Sharp's Reflective label, for which he released his debut album, Sonorities by Starlight, in 1996. A year later he launched Parallel and began releasing his own works, as well as collaborations with Kit Clayton and Jonah Sharp. Williams's style pulses with electro (and did long before it became soup du jour), Detroit and Berlin techno, dreamtime ambient, and a wee bit of goddess-worshiping house. If you miss this show, all of your friends will think you're stupid, and no one will want to fuck you until May 4, 2017. Chicks on speed are fun to hang out with if you like to chain smoke, pick zits, hallucinate monkeys on your roof, and sling back cocktails at Diva's early Monday morning. But then again, there's always the Munich-based synth pop phenomenon Chicks on Speed, who are too artsy for Tenderloin tweakers. This Friday, one-third of the band, Alex Murray-Leslie, makes a just-announced DJ appearance at Fake. The Chicks who also include Melissa Logan and Kiki Moorse released their first album, Will Save Us All!, in 2000 and, like Tenderloin tweakers, like to dress in leather. If you miss this show, the Bay Guardian calendar editors will smoke your stash. Pop. Fridays (Fri/28 with Velocette), 9 p.m.-2 a.m., An Sibin, 1176 Sutter, S.F. $5-$10. (415) 929-1992. Phusion. First Saturdays (Sat/6 with Velocette), 9 p.m.-2 a.m., 26 Mix, 3024 Mission, S.F. $5. (415) 826-7378. Fake. Fridays (Fri/28 with Alex Murray-Leslie), 10 p.m.-3 a.m., Cat Club, 1190 Folsom, S.F. $7. (415) 431-3332. Send comments or tips to amanda@sfbg.com. |
