THE BAY GUARDIAN won six awards in the weekly newspaper category at the California Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were announced June 29 at the association's convention in Coronado. First place in the columns/commentary/criticism category went to culture editor Annalee Newitz for Techsploitation, after judges reviewed several examples of her high-tech and pop culture column, which appears each week. First place was also awarded to art director Victor Krummenacher for front-page design. Other awards included second place for an Oct. 17, 2001, editorial, "First, Stop the Bombing." The Bay Guardian also won second-place honors for its Best of the Bay issue, for editorial-page design, and for a Sept., 26, 2001, illustration that depicted the city's renewable energy system. |
