TerrainArts 165 Jessie; 896-0249. Tues-Fri, noon-5pm. "Border (x)iconography: New Media + Photography from Tijuana." The works by Julio Morales, Sergio de la Torre, Julio Orozco, and Yvonne Venegas explore Tijuana in the age of ever increasing globalization; the images are about border crossing, but they have nothing to do with "immigrants" in the conventional (maybe even stereotypical?) sense. The photography of Yvonne Venegas and Sergio de la Torre captures an aspect of border culture that's often ignored in the press and other public discourse: the lives of middle- and upper-class Mexican women. Venegas takes pictures of her former school friends now living in Tijuana. Unlike stereotypical "border women," they are not maquiladora workers or prostitutes; they live in beautiful homes and raise lovely children with stable family lives. De la Torre's video and photographic project, The Ideal, documents the opinions of educated Mexican women who live in the Bay Area as legal immigrants. Surprisingly, many of them don't consider themselves immigrants at all; they think of it as a name for political refugees or for non-English speakers, but hardly as a term to describe their own lives. Through Sat/3. (Westbrook)

Walter and McBean Galleries San Francisco Art Institute, 800 Chestnut; 749-4563. Mon-Sat, 11am-6pm. "Angelic States - Event Sequence." Connie Samaras's large-scale digital prints are totally unmanipulated; believe it or not, these are actual slices of real life in Los Angeles, New York, and Las Vegas, all taken within the past five years. The idea of "straight" photography is both ironic and interesting to Samaras, not just because she is a lesbian but also because these pictures demonstrate how closely reality can mimic fiction. Minuteman Missile Being Tested over the Skies of Los Angeles looks more like a UFO landing than a missile exploding, and her images of the 2000 Democratic National Convention, full of spotlights and police cars, look like scenes from a Hollywood action movie. Through Sat/27. (Westbrook)

Washington Square Gallery 1821 Powell; 291-9255. Wed-Thurs, Sat-Sun, noon-5pm; Fri, 2:30-5:30pm; and by appt. "Mira," a two-person exhibition featuring Latino artists Servando Garcia and Isabel Urbina. Sat/27.
