Art listings are compiled by Sarah Han. Because of space limitations, new art shows are listed the week they open (thereafter, shows are listed on a rotating basis), and we cannot list café exhibits. For information on how to submit listings to this section, see 8 Days a Week. Reviews are by Lindsey Westbrook.

Exploratorium 3601 Lyon; 563-7337. Thurs-Tues, 10am-6pm; Wed 10am-9pm. $10, $7.50 students and seniors, $6 youths. "Seeing." More than 70 installations, some brand-new and some updated favorites, populate this long-awaited Exploratorium extravaganza. The title of the show may be "Seeing," but you'll probably be most surprised at what you don't see in some of the installations. Change Blindness is a huge computer screen showing a quiet storefront-sidewalk scene. Every few seconds the screen goes black for a moment, then flashes back at what appears to be the same picture. It's actually changing significantly each time, but the intervening black screens prevent your eyes from perceiving the differences. Dozens of other installations explore the social aspects of seeing. Paul Kaiser's Inkblot Perceptions analyzes the ways in which interpretations of Rorschach-like blots vary with age and cultural background. There's also an entire gallery full of sculptures by Judith Scott, a resident artist at the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland whose work has appeared in major museums all over the world. Numerous seeing-related films, lectures, and special events will take place during July and August; go to www.exploratorium.edu for complete information. Through Jan 31, 2003. (Westbrook)

Museo Italo Americano Fort Mason Center, Bldg C, Marina at Laguna; 673-2200. Wed-Sun, noon-5pm (first Wed, noon-7pm). $3, $2 students and seniors, free for 11 and under. "Con le Nostre Mani: With Our Hands." Photographs of Italian-Americans at work in the East Bay from 1890-1960s. Through Sept 8. "American and Italian Landscape." Italian photographer Luciano Monti came to the United States in 1997 to conduct an experiment in landscapes. At national parks such as Death Valley and Yosemite, he found something that, for him, had been missing from his native terrain: uninterrupted, untrammeled nature. His pictures show awesome deserts, rock caverns, and sand dunes that extends endlessly in perfect geometric patterns, repeating without even a grain out of place. Monti shot a series of Italian landscapes after his return home, and in the gallery each American picture is cleverly juxtaposed with an Italian one, provoking connections and dissociations that might otherwise go unnoticed. Through Sept 8. (Westbrook)

Museum of Craft and Folk Art Fort Mason Center, Bldg A, Marina at Laguna; 775-0991. Tues-Fri and Sun, 11am-5pm; Sat, 10am-5pm. $1-3 (free Sat, 10am-noon, and first Wed, 11am-7pm). "Unwearable Art: Clothing in New Media." The 13 clothing designers featured in "Unwearable Art" refuse to let anything stand in the way of their creativity. The most notable work in the show is Carol Durham's Fifi Larue a.k.a. Miss Scarlet, a corset made of hog casings. It's a beautiful sculpture, shaped like a perfect hourglass, with a glistening, pearly-white, rock-hard surface. More than just a reminder of bygone fashions, her corset is a comment on constraints and liberties, including the freedom to cast off all kinds of antiquated ideas about how women should dress and behave. Through Sun/1. (Westbrook) "Findings: The Jewelry of Ramona Solberg." More than 60 works by Solberg and works by Laurie Hall, Ron Ho, Kiff Slemmons, and Nancy Worden. Through Sun/1. Ongoing

Andrea Schwartz Gallery 333 Bryant; 495-2090. Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm; Sat, by appt. Works by Thomas Chang, Belinda Gray, and Sharon Wickham. Thomas Chang's photographs of anonymous empty chairs and couches seem as though they could have been shot in any office lobby or airport lounge. Then you start to notice the other furniture in the rooms, such as the vertical metal poles and wall-mounted TVs, and if that doesn't tip you off, then the titles (Voyeur's Lounge, Lap Dance Chair) certainly will. It's surprising how spooky a vacant strip club can look in the bright light of day. The head-on photographs put us in the position of neither dancer nor patron, but of awkward visitor/voyeur with nothing to watch and not even any darkness or crowd in which to hide. Whereas Chang takes photos are of environments with their usual subjects mysteriously absent, Sharon Wickham zooms in on her subjects, almost completely removing them from their environments. Wickham roams San Francisco's sidewalks in search of abandoned furniture. Totally decontextualized and in fuzzy focus, the discarded sofas and mattresses in her pictures almost come alive, taking on distinct personalities of their own. Belinda Gray's "County Fairs series is also shown. Through Fri/30. (Westbrook)
