The Cosmos
Sat/4, Edinburgh Castle

THERE'S A HUMBLE , charming ruckus going down on the peninsula. The Cosmos started quietly in September 2001, tucked away in a Redwood City storage space. The events of that month did little to deter them. Now after putting out a 7-inch on Becalmed Records and a split single with Nottingham, U.K., slow-core scalawags Loran, the band has emerged from its shell and is making its way up north, with performances in Half Moon Bay and at Hotel Utah in the last year and, this week, at Edinburgh Castle. In hand is sort of. not really. kind of. but badly executed. (Honest Abe), a sweet, rhythm guitar-heavy, self-released full-length. Fans of the Jim Yoshii Pile-up, Death Cab for Cutie, and the Feelies will feel like they're on pleasantly familiar ground, though the band likes to throw around names like Felt, the Avengers, and Television – and guitarist-vocalist Corey Cunningham has said he's specifically itching to touch on the music of Phil Spector and Krautrockers such as Can and Neu. The Cosmos play with Invid and Bel and the Dragon. 8 p.m., 950 Geary, S.F. $3. (415) 885-4074. (Kimberly Chun)
