Masterminded by contemporary French artists Pierre Huyghe and Philippe Parreno, "No Ghost Just a Shell" is a digital-age meditation on life and death, animation and vacuity, art and consumerism. It began in 1999 when Huyghe and Parreno purchased the copyright to a manga character named Annlee. They and their artist friends proceeded to bring her to life through a series of artworks, using sculpture, painting, and animated videos to give her a voice and a personality. The project raises some fascinating moral questions, for instance, about the buying and selling of a "person" like Annlee and her status as a money-making tool for the entertainment industry. If you don't visit the gallery's bathroom, you'll miss one of the best parts: a video by Reuben Lorch-Miller projected onto the rest room wall that features a heavily digitized, slowly moving image of Prado's face accompanied by the sound of Lorch-Miller whistling a well-known Prado melody. Chris Ballantyne's landscapes seem almost normal at first, until you start to notice little things – a car door left open by someone who just left the scene, a tree that's been chopped but hasn't fallen yet. Not even a breath of air stirs, but it's clear that people have been here and left, their business strangely unfinished. Ballantyne has a very Dr. Seuss-like predilection for simple colors, cartoonish shapes, and underpopulated, alien-seeming terrain. Many of his paintings look at the world from a dramatically precarious point of view, calling our attention to various kinds of disjunctions and disruptions in land, water, fences, and pipes.
