Gregory Hines
Sat/22, Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium

LAST MONTH GREGORY Hines turned 57. That means he's spent 55 years onstage dancing, singing, and acting. Those of us who saw him in White Nights, a (rather crummy) 1985 movie that paired him with another superstar of dance, Mikhail Baryshnikov, appreciate the fierce expressiveness he brought to the part. Last time I saw him live, a couple of years ago, he was giving a workshop to tap teachers in the East Bay. Slightly stooped – a professional malformation that comes from years of listening to your own feet – he still danced circles around performers 30 years his junior. Hines is a transitional figure in tap who came of age and kept the art alive when other greats, such as the Nicholas Brothers (with whom he had studied and performed at the Apollo Theater in Harlem), had almost sunk into obscurity. If you have some tap shoes in your closet, take them along. Hines regularly invites audience members to share the stage with him. At a recent concert, one of those who took him up on it was a three-year-old boy; another was a 70-year-old woman. 8 p.m., Marin Veterans' Memorial Auditorium, 10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael. $28-$45. (415) 499-6800. (Rita Felciano)
