Intersection for the Arts 446 Valencia; 626-2787. Wed-Sat, noon-5pm. "The World Is Beginning to Tremble: Ché = R + Evolution. Ché is remembered today for only a fraction of what he actually accomplished as a doctor, journalist, photographer, educator, and of course, revolutionary. His image has suffered the same fate, reduced over the last few decades to a mere handful of pop-iconic pictures that belie very little of his real-life complexity. Rectifying some of this historical oversimplification was what Claudia Bernardi and 12 of her former California College of Arts and Crafts students had in mind when they began planning this installation. Bernardi et al focus on his accomplishments, in particular his literacy campaigns. Red-bound books are everywhere on every wall: metal plated, wax encrusted, tied up, stripped, stacked, and punctured. Rather than showing the familiar image of Ché dead on a canvas stretcher, they re-create the moment of his martyrdom with a book that's been shot up as Ché's body was. The show is an unapologetic celebration of Ché's idealism and self-sacrifice. Through May 24. (Westbrook)

Linc Real Art 1632C Market; 503-1981. Wed-Sun, noon-6pm. "House Salad: Optimism Between the Cracks." Road signs are designed to have one singular, unambiguous meaning, with text and image perfectly unified in a crystal-clear message. Shot full of holes and ripped from their native environment, however, they become Charles Linder's found-object artworks. What the bullet holes signify is hard to say – maybe the evacuation of simplicity and the introduction of some darker, more complicated and disruptive element. They definitely have to do with redneckism, but given the current state of affairs, it's also possible to read into Linder's signs a more general commentary on violence and its intrusion into a world that is no longer so simple. Also participating in the show are Gail Tarantino and L.G. Williams. Tarantino paints text on canvases and pages of braille. Her musings are alternately enigmatic and profound, funny and sad. Williams presents his brand-new "Duct and Covered" series, which features a group of everyday objects encased in duct tape. Through Sun/11. (Westbrook)

Logan Galleries California College of Arts and Crafts, 1111 Eighth St; 551-9210. Wed, Thurs, Sat, 11am-6pm; Tues, Fri, 11am-8pm. "Capp Street Project: 20th Anniversary Exhibition." The Capp Street Project was the first internationally recognized program to focus solely on installation art. The California College of Arts and Crafts' Wattis Institute took over the project in 1998 and is celebrating CPS's 20th anniversary with a special four-part exhibition featuring Roni Horn, Ann Veronica Janssens, Mike Kelley, and Mike Nelson. Nelson's Pumpkin Palace is a former Green Tortoise Adventure Travel bus that the artist totally gutted and reconstructed into a claustrophobic, mazelike residence. Climb aboard and you're suddenly in a windowless anxiety dream that spits you back out with sensory overload and oxygen starvation. Kelley presents Light (Time)-Space Modulator, a room-sized, motorized contraption with an entire spiral staircase extricated from his Los Angeles home. A cleverly crafted slide show creates a kind of time-bridge between Kelley's current remodeling job and the house as it looked when the previous owners lived there, casting the artist as a kind of Shining-esque Jack Nicholson character (but without the murder part) and asking probing questions about spaces and their histories, and how a residence can retain bits of its past lives and even exert influence on its current occupant. Through Sat/10. (Westbrook)
