Change Blindness is a huge computer screen showing a quiet storefront-sidewalk scene. Every few seconds the screen goes black for a moment, then flashes back to what appears to be the same picture. It actually changes significantly each time, but the intervening black screens prevent your eyes from perceiving the differences. Dozens of other installations explore the social aspects of seeing. Paul Kaiser's Inkblot Perceptions analyzes the ways in which interpretations of Rorschach-like blots vary with age and cultural background. Go to www.exploratorium.edu for complete information. Velvet da Vinci 508 Hayes; 626-7478. Tues-Sat, noon-6pm; Sun, noon-4pm. "Chess." This traveling exhibition presents an incredible collection of chess pieces by 90 international artists. The artists' only constraint was that each piece had to be small enough to play on a standard chessboard. Otherwise, anything was fair game, and the results are more than just a fabulous bunch of pint-size sculptures. Kings and queens predominate, not surprisingly. Their powerful roles, combined with their strong gender identification, served as creative (and humorous) inspiration for artists such as Dawn Emms and Hilary Pfeifer. Katy Hackney chopped up an ordinary, contemporary chess set and reglued the pieces into crooked conglomerations of black and white, pawns and bishops, kings, queens, and who knows what. They come off as thoughtful subversions of the roles and symbols associated with this time-honored and intensely intellectual game. Through Sat/31. (Westbrook)
