This exhibition traces Rondal Partridge's career in California photography; a concurrent show at the Oakland Museum of California examines his "personal photography." It begins with his work in the 1930s under Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams and then follows him to the rodeo circuit and to a brief stint in New York doing magazine work in the 1940s. His roadside-America images from the '50s and '60s look at all different kinds of signage and commercial architecture, and recent photos of family and friends round out the show. Through Sun/22. More than 90 black-and-white photographs. Through July 6. "Seeing." Though the title of the show is "Seeing," you'll probably be most surprised at what you don't see in some of the installations. Change Blindness is a huge computer screen showing a quiet storefront-sidewalk scene. Every few seconds the screen goes black for a moment, then flashes back to what appears to be the same picture. It actually changes significantly each time, but the intervening black screens prevent your eyes from perceiving the differences. Dozens of other installations explore the social aspects of seeing. Paul Kaiser's Inkblot Perceptions analyzes the ways in which interpretations of Rorschach-like blots vary with age and cultural background. Go to www.exploratorium.edu for complete information. Through Sept 1. (Westbrook)

66 Balmy Annex 591 Guerrero; 522-0502. Wed-Sun, 1-6pm. "Other Attachments, an Investigation into My Consumption." For Francis Baker, price tags serve as the building blocks of his latest series of artworks. He personalizes the tags with "Kiss me," "Buy me," "Pick me," and dozens of other handwritten requests, beseeching viewers for love and money. Baker says the tags symbolize consumption and its accompanying implications: desires rewarded, needs fulfilled. Attached to a canvas and situated in a retail gallery, the tags are clearly commenting on the art business as a business. Desire Hangs upon Me, for example, is a lovely female nude – a ubiquitous subject throughout art history – with a backbone of price tags. Baker's obvious willingness to participate in the gallery system, however, suggests he has some ambivalence about the art business being such a bad thing (and 66 Balmy is definitely an artist-friendly gallery). Are you lonely and longing for a personal connection? Feeling helpless and ineffectual? Perhaps, Baker suggests with an ironic smile, buying one of his canvases may be just the thing. Through June 27. (Westbrook)
