Noche Flamenca
June 25-July 6, Zellerbach Playhouse

A COUPLE OF years ago, on one of the steamiest nights in San Francisco, the Madrid-based Noche Flamenca made its Bay Area debut at Theatre Artaud. It was not the most auspicious of introductions, since at first it was difficult to judge how much of the heat was generated by the performers and how much was from the high-pressure system sitting offshore. It soon became clear, though, that this group of dancers and musicians could probably make an igloo melt. What was most remarkable was how much the performance concentrated on the love affair – and fierce competition – between the music and the dance. There was a fire burnishing those bodies that went way beyond technique, formidable as that was. It was a hot night in every aspect. Noche Flamenca (three dancers, two guitarists, and two singers) is back, performing its tableau-style concert in the intimate setting of the Zellerbach Playhouse, a good theater for dance but only available for nonschool groups when UC Berkeley is not in session. The company's two-week engagement is part of Cal Performances' Celebración de las Culturas de Iberoamérica series. Wed/25-Sat/28, Tues/1, and July 2-3 and 5, 8 p.m.; July 6, 7 p.m., UC Berkeley, Bancroft at Dana Court, Berk. $30-$42. (510) 642-9988. (Rita Felciano)
