SHIFT>>> Physical Theater
Aug. 8-10, Dance Mission Theatre

CHOREOGRAPHER MANUELITO BIAG is best known as an eloquent interpreter of choreography by Nancy Karp, Margaret Jenkins, and Joe Goode. The Philippines-born, U.S.-educated Biag moved with his parents to the States during the Marcos regime. His connection to his native land is mainly through his family, and he was deeply moved when he read what earlier immigrants had to go through when trying to make a new life for themselves here. He was particularly touched by Carlos Bulosan's account of his life as a migrant farmer, America Is in the Heart. In this program, "Giving Strength to This Fragile Tongue," Biag performs Near Whisper, a solo tribute to Bulosan. Travelogue, an ensemble piece for Biag's five-year-old SHIFT>>> Physical Theater, which premiered in San Jose last year, explores travel as a journey to self-discovery. Guest artist Company Mécanique, another young local dance company, presents Biag's When We Believe Again. Jess Rowland composed the music for the evening. Fri.-Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun., 7 p.m., 3316 24th St., S.F. $15-$20. (415) 282-4765. (Rita Felciano)
