Salvadoran civil war documentary
Wednesday, September 10, the documentary We Are Salvadorans!
explores the troubles and resilience of three survivors of El Salvador's
civil war and is followed by a discussion and Q&A session with filmmaker
Susan Figueroa and community representatives. Due to the graphic nature

Afghan heroine book
Thursday, Sept. 11, attend a reading and celebration of Meena,
Heroine of Afghanistan, the Martyr Who Founded RAWA, the Revolutionary
Association of the Women of Afghanistan. This book is the only account
of the founder of the first political organization of Afghan women struggling
for justice (Meena was assassinated in 1987 in Pakistan). The author,
Melody Ermachild Chavis, will donate all proceeds to RAWA's medical

Chilean memorial
Thursday, Sept. 11, progressive political analyst Michael Parenti
joins local Chileans for a tribute to Orlando Letelier. Letelier, an
exiled Chilean diplomat and outspoken critic of the Pinochet regime,
was assassinated in 1976 by a car bomb in Washington, D.C. Letelier's
son Francisco, a poet and muralist, closes the program with a presentation
on the significance of the two historical events of Sept. 11: the 1973
bombing of La Moneda in Chile and the 2001 terrorist attacks in the

Haight-Ashbury neighborhood meeting
Thursday, Sept. 11, the Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood Council
sponsors a meeting addressing upcoming ballot measures concerning the
minimum wage, homelessness, and the Police Commission. Guest speakers
representing different sides of these issues will answer questions from

Sept. 11, 2001, memorial events
Thursday, Sept. 11, commemorate the thousands of people who
have lost their lives in the terrorist attacks two years ago in New
York and Washington, D.C., at the "Impeach the Terrorists!"
rally at the Golden Gate Park Panhandle, which is followed by a march
to the "9-11 Power to the Peaceful" festival at Speedway Meadow.
At noon join the Quaker Witness for Peace group for a similar rally
in front of the Federal Building, downtown. In the evening, there are
two events to choose from: Guerrilla News Network's documentary "Aftermath:
Unanswered Questions from 9-11, which is followed by a public dialogue,
and the Truth Alliance's "Another History Is Beginning" forum
with videos and guest speakers. "Impeach the Terrorists!"

Israel's nukes
Friday, Sept. 12, the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists'
Social Justice Committee presents Israel's Secret Weapon, a documentary
by journalist Olenka Frenkiel investigating Israel's weapons of mass
destruction and the case of incarcerated nuclear whistle-blower Mordechai

Friday, Sept. 12, Star Trek's George Takei and public
defender Jeff Adachi are the special guests at "Let's Beam Tom

Ammiano. Takei, who played Sulu on Star Trek, joins cohosts Dale
Minami and Brad Bach for a silent auction and live entertainment at

WTO and corporate power
Saturday, Sept. 13, come to the discussion "The WTO and
the Pentagon: Making the World Safe for Corporate Power." Panelists
include Max Elbaum, author of Revolution in the Air, and Ahmed
Shawki, editor of the International Socialist Review. Tonight's
event takes place as international leaders meet in Cancún, Mexico,
for the World Trade Organization's Ministerial Conference. At the conference
leaders are discussing how to get developing countries to pay off debts.

Gate Park's Music Concourse to be ripped up (in order to allow the construction

the Alliance for Golden Gate Park's appeal of the Planning Commission's
July 24 approval of an environmental impact report, which would allow
