Resfest
Thurs/18-Sun/21, Bimbo's 365 Club and Palace of Fine Arts

UNHINDERED BY A specific mission, Resfest is simply about innovation, slick design, and being fucking cool. This is the digital martini of film festivals. With a focus on form, the fest – now in its seventh year – has become a launching pad for some of the most inventive new work in digital filmmaking; heck, some of it's even commercially viable (flash sign of the cross at your own discretion). Resfest is composed of seven programs of shorts and videos, including a Michel Gondry retrospective featuring the director's wacked-out music videos for the White Stripes, the Foo Fighters, Cibo Matto, and the grand dame of trippy, Björk. Spike Jonze, another successful oddball, has dredged his vault for some classic nuggets, including "The Oasis Video that Never Happened," in which Londoners listen to a song by the band, then expound on their own genius conceptions about what the never-produced video should look like. Other programs feature themes such as the work-a-day world and geographic meditations. A standout in the (sort of) DIY-based "Shorts Program #1" is obsessive cinemaniac Virgil Widrich's "Fast Film," a stunning homage to all movie genres constructed from more than 65,000 folding image prints of 300 films. This year's Resfest also includes tours of local digital studios, lectures, and an opening-night bash at Bimbo's 365 Club with live music by Amon Toblin and RJD2.
