Recall redux

What follows are excerpts from the candidate statements of some of the 135 people who are running for governor of California:

Alex-St. James, Republican, Sacramento:

Once an Aspirant Catholic Priest, I support life from conception to the grave and the right to bear arms…

Warren Farrell, Democrat, Carlsbad:

My recent research has uncovered why children raised by single dads do better than children raised by single moms; why men now earn less money than women for the same work; why our sons now do worse in school than our daughters...

D. (Logan Darrow) Clements, Republican, Pacific Palisades:

Atlas Shrugged, America's second most influential book, was written by an immigrant to California who predicted our current mess and offered an inspiring solution. Ayn Rand knew that big government ruins all it touches while freedom leads to incredible prosperity... See the work of freedom in grocery stores filled with food, hospitals filled with lifesaving technology, and a computer industry filled with innovation.

Larry Flynt, Democrat, Beverly Hills:

…I can do a better job at balancing the budget than those pinhead bureaucrats in Sacramento. I have a simple idea of how to eliminate the deficit without increasing anyone's taxes or cutting funding for any programs-and that is to expand California gaming to include slot machines for all private clubs… California is the most progressive state in the union and I'm sure its citizens would welcome having a smut peddler who cares as their Governor.

Kevin Richter, Republican, Manteca:

I breathe. [Editor's Note: This is his entire statement]

Kurt E. "Tachikaze" Rightmyer, Independent, West Covina:

The name Tachikaze stands for "wind from a sword stroke." As the leading middleweight of the 2003 California State Sumo Series and a serious, well-educated, nonpartisan candidate for governor, I will attack the 800-lb. gorilla of big government from every angle.

Ned Roscoe, Libertarian, Napa:

I am a grocer who, with his family, specializes in selling cigarettes to adults who make their own decisions. Customers tell me they want no new taxes, no stupid new laws, and for someone to step up to get the work of government done… I am optimistic, with the calm confidence of a Christian with four aces.

David Ronald Sams, Republican, Agoura Hills:

The $100,000,000 Man with a Plan. I am a forward-thinking Republican; born a Republican-still a Republican after 45 years. I am a businessman who has generated over $100,000,000. You've seen many of my products on TV… I helped convince theater owners to implement a photo ID check to keep teens out of R-rated movies. Yes, I'm a producer, but also a concerned parent. There's too much violence in the media. I've won nine Emmy awards.

Diane Beall Templin, American Independent, Escondido:

May the Lord give you the wisdom of Solomon as you vote. I pray that the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God will guide me in all decisions, especially in selecting the best and brightest trusted servants to resolve the budget crisis and heal our land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Leonard Padilla, Independent, Sacramento:

As a professional bounty hunter for over 28 years, I have had to make critical and unimaginable decisions while enforcing the laws of California.
