'Retrospective Performance Festival Extravaganza'
Fri/12-Sun/14, 848 Community Space

DURING HIS MOST recent season, dancer Scott Wells performed one of his best pieces in years. At 848 was transparently structured, vibrant with physical presence, and generous in spirit. In that way it was an emulation of the theater in which it was produced and to which it paid tribute. Wells thrives in those humble surroundings – small but capable of allowing imaginations to soar. So do many other Bay Area artists. This weekend 848 Community Space (as part of its monthlong "Little Space That Could" programming) celebrates itself with a "Retrospective Performance Festival Extravaganza." Here's a description of just some of the folks who will show up: a renowned sexologist (Carol Queen), a fierce feminist dancer (Krissy Keefer), S-M ritualists (Fakir and Cleo), sheer athleticism and grace in action (that'd be Wells), a radical political a cappella trio (Samsara), deliciously physical dance theater (Sonya Smith), a drag queen (Peggy L'Eggs), a San Francisco contemporary dance all-star (Kathleen Hermesdorf), and a luscious queer dance artist (Tara Brandel). Who could ask for more? 848 may need a new home in the near future. Anybody have suggestions? 8 p.m., 848 Divisadero, S.F. $12-$20 (no one turned away for lack of funds). (415) 922-2385, email 848.
