Dan's top five still-alive restaurants

1. Yummy Yummy. Raw beef salad. Raw beef salad. Oh my god! Oh my god! Burritos be damned, Vietnamese is my current favorite go-to food. 1015 Irving, S.F. (415) 566-4722.

2. Just for You. Best breakfast for my money, still. Southern-style S.F., with grits, beignets, good sausages, cornmeal pancakes ... 732 22nd St., S.F. (415) 647-3033.

3. Zachary's Chicago Pizza. I just can't get over the fact that the best Chicago-style pizza in the country is in Berkeley. Lucky us. But, if you want to stay lucky, go off-hours. 1853 Solano, Berk. (510) 525-5950; 5801 College, Oakl. (510) 655-6385.

4. Cliff's Barbecue. Only place I've ever had consistently great smoked chicken. Fried okra. And my favorite sauce. 2177 Bayshore Blvd., S.F. (415) 330-0736.

5. Chez Panisse. Pretty good too. 1517 Shattuck, Berk. (510) 548-5525.

... and his top five R.I.P. places

1. Ann's Cafe. Five-pound omelettes and 10 tons of atmosphere. Simply the best, ever. Anywhere.

2. Gravy's (1997-2003). Six of the greasiest, graviest years of my life, thanks to Gravy's fried oysters and generally spectacular soul food.

3.Yamo Thai Kitchen. Vegetarian? Dead. Rest in peace. We miss you, Anna.

4. Royal Kitchen. Irreplaceably great Chinese food. Still waiting for someone else to step up.

5. Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. I don't care, I ain't moving to L.A. (But I might go there for breakfast some Sunday.)
