West Wave Dance Festival July 21-Aug. 1, ODC Theater and Cowell Theater SUMMERFEST/DANCE'S West Wave Dance Festival crams 15 world premieres and 22 choreographers into four programs. The first round of performances takes place at the ODC Theater, the second at Cowell Theater the thinking being that the Cowell's larger seating capacity is a better venue for more-established groups. The opening-night program with four out of the six pieces brand-new is performed once; the other three are scheduled for two evenings each. The festival is about as condensed an overview as you're ever likely to see of local choreographers and dancers hopping, sliding, flying, and swooping. Enriching the mix this year are ballet choreographers (Viktor Kabaniaev, Amy Seiwert), modernists (Janice Garrett, Nancy Karp), veterans (Sara Shelton Mann, Deborah Slater), youngsters (Brittany Brown Ceres, Chingchi Yu), and dance-theater folks from Capacitor and Fellow Travelers Performance Group. The fun of such potpourri programs lies in the almost inevitable surprises; audiences who come to see a specific piece or artist encounter somebody new, unexpected, hopefully imaginative, and even playful. Wed/21, Fri/23-Sat/24, 8 p.m., ODC Theater, 3153 17th St., S.F.; July 29-Aug. 1, 8 p.m., Cowell Theater, Fort Mason Center, Marina at Laguna, S.F. $18-$20. (415) 863-9834, www.summerfestdance.org.
