Hagen and Simone and Tongue
Aug. 26-28, ODC Theater

FINDING CONGENIAL PARTNERS , pooling resources, and building on what you have in common works in both business and personal relationships. It also works in dance. Hagen and Simone – a.k.a. Monique Jenkinson and Kevin Clarke – and the Los Angeles-based Tongue (in its San Francisco debut) are trying out a North-South hookup. Though "fashion-conscious" may not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of dancers (unlike, say, "graceful" or "athletic"), these two groups understand the fashion world's superficiality, its fun elements, and its ability to shape images. Hagen and Simone's Future Perfect sews together the language of former Vogue editor Diana Vreeland and good old Strunk and White's The Elements of Style. In Tongue's Tertium Quid, Stephanie Gilliland uses her rocket-speed choreography to explore an Indian mystic, Sadhus, and a very contemporary saint (in some quarters) who's recently stepped into the world of fashion: Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. This performance features an excerpt from the piece's recently revised 2001 version. 8 p.m., 3153 17th St., S.F. $15. (415) 863-9834, www.odctheater.org. (Rita Felciano)
