District Five debate

Wednesday, Sept. 1, watch Lisa Feldstein, Emmett Gilman, Robert Haaland, Ross Mirkarimi, Michael O'Connor, Jim Siegel, and Tys Sniffen duke it out for Matt Gonzalez's seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors at a debate moderated by KGO-TV city reporter Carolyn Tyler. Store boycott

Saturday, Sept. 4, on the one-year anniversary of the closure of Real Foods, an organic grocer in Noe Valley, come protest the new owner, Nutraceutical International Corp. The vitamins and energy products distributor fired the 30-plus Real Foods employees, who had been on the verge of unionizing prior to the change of ownership, and has yet to open the store for business. Kurdish rights conference

Saturday, Sept. 4-Sunday, Sept. 5, attend a conference on the plight of the Kurdish people, many of whom live on and around the borders of Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria and face the threat of violence and displacement from these countries. Along with Kurdish food and cultural activities, the conference includes speakers and films exploring the Kurds' efforts at resistance, nationhood, and self-determination. Labor mural unveiling

Monday, Sept. 6, celebrate the unveiling of Our Work Life: Three Generations of Bay Area Work and Workers – a 56-foot-long mural that tells the story of California labor history through images and quotations to be installed on five SamTrans commuter buses from Sept. 6 through Nov. 8 – with artists Oscar Melara and Kate Connell, workers depicted in the mural, and a Latin swing band. 1-5 p.m., International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 34, Ships Clerks Association, Union Hall, 4 Berry, S.F. March for Oakland education
