Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company Fri/24-Sat/25, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater FOR HER "Home Season" program, Lily Cai goes for something old and something new. The old goes back to 1993's Dynasty Suite, for which Cai assembled a marvelous collection of traditional dances from various provinces in China. Performed on a makeshift stage at the Chinese Cultural Center by dancers still in their teens and anything but highly trained, these dances impressed with the wide range of their expressiveness and their refined elegance. Today, the Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company is an ensemble of sleek dancers who make a powerful case for Cai's particular perspective on Western and Eastern femininity, one in which strength and sweetness, athleticism and demureness, comfortably cohabit. For the world premiere of Beyond, Cai's excellent composer-collaborator Gang Situ has assembled a suite of Western and Chinese music. The piece, according to Cai, looks at the passions at the core of a woman's life. 8 p.m., 700 Howard, S.F. $20-$35. (415) 978-2787, www.ybca.org. (Rita Felciano) |
