National Ballet of Canada
Thurs/30-Sun/3, Zellerbach Hall

LOCAL DANCE FANS might remember Canadian choreographer James Kudelka, who staged several pieces at the San Francisco Ballet in the 1990s. The works showed him as musical, with a wide-ranging, slightly askew imagination and considerable skill in putting dances together. After a foray to Canada's other major ensemble, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Kudelka returned to his home to run the National Ballet of Canada. The 53-year-old company is making a belated, first-in-13-years West Coast appearance. Given the fact that Kudelka is such a prolific artist, it'll be fun to see him wear three different choreographic hats: the program includes the 27-dancer Four Seasons, his first major gift to his dancers after he became the National Ballet's artistic director; a series of pas de deux in there, below, set to music by Vaughan Williams; and a world premiere, Chacony, set to Henry Purcell. Completing the program is Balanchine's masterful Apollo. All performances feature live music by members of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. Thurs.-Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun., 3 p.m., UC Berkeley, Bancroft at Telegraph, Berk. $36-$68. (510) 642-9988, www.tickets.com. (Rita Felciano)
