San Francisco International
South Asian Film Festival FILM COLLECTIVE 3RD I known for its ongoing screening series of movies from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal has staged the rebirth of the San Francisco International South Asian Film Festival. 3rd I presents a fierce, weekend-long lineup of independent features and shorts programs, as well as a campy Bollywood number for good measure. A festival highlight is Jukti Takko Aar Gappo (Reason, Argument, and Story), a 1974 autobiographical piece by famed Bengali filmmaker Ritwak Ghatak. Starkiss: Circus Girls in India, a documentary about Indian and Nepalese girls on the verge of adolescence who are pulled into the demanding and socially ostracizing life of the circus, is another gem. This year's shorts program turns its eye to Bay Area women filmmakers. But perhaps the most scintillating offering in the festival is Second Generation, a made-for-TV British drama about the sexploits of gorgeous brown folk. As if that weren't enough eye candy for one weekend, 3rd I has scored Second Generation star Parminder Nagra (of Bend It like Beckham and ER fame) for an in-person Q&A. See Rep Clock for a schedule.
