'The Moving Benefit: 848's 13th Anniversary Shows' Fri/19-Sat/20, 848 Community Space IT'S A BIG blowout. 848 Community Space is kicking the bucket but in a good way. The venue is moving to better, and larger, quarters at 1310 Mission St., down the block from Alonzo King's Lines Studio and the Jon Sims Center for the Performing Arts. Still, I'll miss the squeak of the rickety old stairs, the curtain that led to the bathrooms and dressing area, the swallow's nest that passed for a lighting booth, the smell of wood so peculiar to old San Francisco buildings, and the way audiences squeezed themselves into the seating arrangements even if it meant they ended up as pretzels. The new space also comes with a new name; starting in January, 848 Community Space will be known as Counterpulse Community Space. So if you've enjoyed 848 over the years, join Keith Hennessy, Sean Dorsey, Jill Nagle, Robert Henry Johnson, Rachel Shaw, Scott Wells, and many others for a big finale: a pair of benefit shows to help buy plugs, piping, flooring, locks, chairs, and other necessities for the new digs. 8 p.m., 848 Divisadero, S.F. $12-$20. (415) 922-2385. (Rita Felciano) |
