The censure nonsense SUP. MICHELA Alioto-Pier's proposal to censure her colleague Sup. Chris Daly is the silliest thing since the impeachment of Bill Clinton. The supervisors should reject it, with extreme prejudice. Alioto-Pier started this ridiculous crusade after Daly got into a confrontation with landlords who oppose a bill that would help protect seniors and disabled people from eviction. We recognize that Daly has a temper, and he should have been more diplomatic. We suspect he realizes that too. But there's a real issue here: vulnerable people are losing their homes so that real estate speculators can make quick money (see Opinion, 11/9/04). Daly's legislation would simply make it more difficult for people who evict seniors and disabled tenants to get a condo-conversion permit. It's a good bill, and Daly is right to vigorously fight for it. The whole censure notion detracts from the importance of what Daly is doing and sets a terrible precedent. Alioto-Pier's political record is weak and largely worthless (she even recently proclaimed that there was no need for more sunshine at City Hall). She ought to be working on her own record instead of embarrassing herself with this sort of nonsense. |
