Wed-Sat, 8pm (also Sat, 2pm); Sun, 3pm. $36-74. Matthew Bourne almost but not quite knew what he was doing when he first took on the traditional Nutcracker in 1991. His version, just like the hero, is both wooden and kicking. Imposing narrative coherence on an impossibly bifurcated libretto is his biggest feat; filling a story, sometimes more saccharine than sweet, with a much-needed dose of dissing is another. Creating emotionally involving characters is not yet at the top of Bourne's skills the humor in the piece is big, but its pure dance values are negligible. Despite these provisos, Nutcracker! is very much worth seeing. It's funny and well-performed, and production is fabulous, with gorgeous sets (including a lusty open mouth) and costumes to die for. However, if you really love the traditional Nutcracker as Tchaikovsky meant it to be, this one is probably not for you.
