Tsunami relief benefits
Jan. 28-Feb. 2, various venues

MUSICIANS HAVE BEEN known to rock many a worthy cause. From Willie Nelson's Farm Aid to Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit, concert fundraisers have become a way to bring together the socially conscious and the musically talented. In the wake of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia, San Francisco is playing host to a number of benefit shows. If you didn't get a ticket to Friday's sold-out fundraiser at the Great American Music Hall featuring Ben Gibbard and Mark Kozelek, you can still catch other tsunami-relief events around town. Also on Friday, members of jam bands New Monsoon and Animal Liberation Orchestra rock out at 12 Galaxies. On Sunday, Blind Justice, the MoFonics, OM&M, the Dave Miller Trio, Diminished Capacity Revue, and the Highwater Blues Band play at Bottom of the Hill to raise money for the American Red Cross International Response Fund; cabaret stars the Uptown Singers, David Miotke, Layne Littlepage, and others perform at a benefit for reconstruction efforts in Thailand at Michael's Octavia Lounge; and salsa musicians Orquestra Borinquen, Louis Romero y Mazacote, John Santos Quintet, and others get bodies moving on Cafe Cocomo's dance floor to benefit Sarvodaya, an organization helping tsunami orphans. On Monday at the Elbo Room, noise-rock stalwarts Erase Errata are joined by Murder Murder, Curse of the Birthmark, and So So Many White White Tigers at a fundraiser for Mercy Ships and International Relief Teams. And next Wednesday at Bottom of the Hill, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Oscillating Innards, Meanest Man Contest, Whysp, and David and Joanna play a benefit for the Asia Foundation and Doctors Without Borders.
