Not a tourist In an effort to boost San Francisco's image and provide a way for residents to meet people from all over the world, Golden Gate Greeters (567 Sutter, S.F. 415-248-5927) employs a small army of volunteers who devote a few hours a month to showing tourists the real Frisco – uh, sorry, we mean San Francisco. "It's like hanging out with that local friend you wish you had – but don't," said Elizabeth Smith, Golden Gate Greeters program director.

Talk therapy The doctors at Golden State Psychological Health Center (100 North Point, S.F. 415-986-4029, www.gsphc.net) will give you attention and advice to treat your mental illness – but not pills. "We are of the opinion that medications are both unnecessary and dangerous," said Dr. Alexander D. Bingham, who founded the center earlier this year. They also offer body-oriented treatments and traditional psychotherapy. "A strong relationship between mind and body is crucial for mental health," Bingham said.
