Counterpointe
Aug. 5-7, ODC Theater

IN 2001, Oakland Ballet dancers Sarah Marcus and Erica Hartono decided they really needed to dance more. So they formed a little company, Counterpointe, which every summer performs works the duo either commissions or acquires. Remarkable for this young ensemble is its commitment to music, some of it also commissioned, much of it performed live. For this year's fifth-anniversary season, Berkeley choreographer Sonya Delwaide gave them a charming sextet, Cote Jardin, which she created for Mills College dance students in March. The piece is inspired by Stravinsky and the tiny gardens that dot Parisian neighborhoods. The other works in the program, titled "Works in Motion," are premieres. John Butterfield, who directs the Dance Through Time company, choreographed an as-yet-unnamed sextet for couples to Mozart. For her Trio in Retrograde, Hartono collaborates with her sister, pianist Stephanie Hartono. Choreographer Erica Rose Jeffrey enlists jazz musician Sylvain Carton, and Marcus's Unbound will be performed to live strings. Fri.-Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun., 2 p.m., 3153 17th St., SF. $15-$18.
