'ChoreoFest 2005'
Aug. 21-24, Yerba Buena Gardens

THE ANNUAL YERBA Buena Gardens ChoreoFest is the dance community's gift to downtown workers who prefer to eat lunch on a lawn instead of in a steamy cafeteria, or to those who enjoy the downtown area on less hectic Sundays. Curated by Butoh Festival founder Brechin Flournoy and Shereel Washington, codirector of the Black Performing Artists Network, this four-day event is a mini festival showcasing what's happening in Bay Area dance scene right now. The curators have made an effort to cull work from younger artists and smaller companies who may not be at home yet inside local theaters, but whose work can be appreciated without the accoutrements of sets and lights. For some of the artists, the experience of performing in front of a public that they can actually see is a new experience. So is not having strict sight lines. Not surprisingly, the program is something of a smorgasbord – but to watch, let's say, hip-hop and Butoh or traditional Korean and Hawaiian dance styles on the same program should be a real kick. Many pieces will feature live music. Sun/21, 1-2 p.m.; Aug. 22-24, 12:30-1:30 p.m., Yerba Buena Gardens, Fourth St. at Mission, SF. Free. (415) 543-1718, www.ybgf.org. (Rita Felciano)
