Archer Prewitt

POST-ROCK FOLK ROCK Soft rock, Sof' Boy, marshmallow sweetness through and through — Archer Prewitt is a big ol' softie in the best possible sense. The Sea and Cake guitarist, ex-Coctails cutup, and Sof' Boy comic artist makes sun-dappled, quiet jazz rock and folk rock dressed up in acoustic guitar, mellotron, bells, brass, and strings. Steely Dan and Nick Drake meet, shake hands, and part amiably? Chicago, the band, converges with America, the country rock popheads? There's a little of that for everyone when Prewitt finally makes the time to play songs off his latest solo album, Wilderness (Thrill Jockey), a full year after its release. But don't be hard on him — Prewitt has been somewhat preoccupied: The Windy City artist's comics have been included in McSweeney's comic collections, and his work has surfaced in traveling and Chicago gallery shows. The M's and the Ebb and Flow also perform. (Kimberly Chun)
