FICTION '06

The Guardian is pleased to announce the winners of its short-fiction contest, with thanks to the hundreds of writers who submitted entries. This year's judges were Peter Orner, assistant professor of creative writing at San Francisco State University and author of The Esther Stories; Kate Braverman, a novelist and poet whose new book is the Graywolf Prize–winning memoir Frantic Transmissions to and from Los Angeles; and Camille Roy, a novelist, poet, playwright, and creative-writing teacher. They have awarded first prize to the story published here, "Puente," by Alexandre Mas. The second-place story is Randall Osborne's "At the Chosen Point of Entry, Finding Loss," and third place goes to Sy Huff for "What I Did on My Summer Vacation." There are also two honorable mentions: Jenny Bitner's "The Carrot and the Girl" and Starbright Bilyck's "Sunday Secrets." The winners will read their stories at 826 Valencia (826 Valencia, SF. 415-642-5905) on March 2 at 7 p.m.
