NOISE: 10 to the 75

75 Degrees' Rick Bond was late with his holiday year-end Top 10 in terms of the print edition of the Guardian, but it's never too late for our always-interested, always-ravenous-for-news blogestablishmentarianistic virtual side. Fill our Top 10 void, Rick. Here 'tis, at last:

The Grand Canyon and Noah's flood

By Tim Redmond

This one is really amazing, even by the standards of our current theocracy: The National Park Service is selling a book in the Grand Canyon bookstore that argues that the canyon was created by Noah's flood. And "The Grand Canyon Park is not permitted to give an official estimate of the geologic age of its principal feature, due to pressure from Bush Administration appointees," the group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility says.

For starters, after my long years in Catholic school, I th Read more »

Another (huge) test for Pelosi

The NY Times today has it about right on tax policy: The Democrats are ducking for cover while Bush continues to demand that his insane tax cuts be made permanent. Lyndon Johnson was forced to recognize in the 1960s that he couldn't have both a Great Society and the Vietnam War at the same time without figuring out how to pay for it all, but back then, it wasn't considered political suicide to raise taxes on the rich. The head of the city's police watchdog agency announced at a San Francisco Police Commission meeting last night that he would be resigning his post in early February. The Office of Citizen Complaints is one of the few city entities in the nation that independently investigates charges of police misconduct from civilians and maintains the power to subpoena officers. NOISE: Malkmus mender

OK, I have to say one of my fondest straight-outta-Stockton moments had to be the time when, on stage at the Fillmore, Stephen Malkmus gave a shout out to his family in the audience - and the restaurant they just patronized: Benihana. Did I hallucinate that or what?

I first encounted Mindy Smith on VH-1 Country, of all places -- it was a video for her cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" (with the divine Ms. P providing backing vocals), which matched Smith's unfussy, dulcet voice with a mournful, almost eerie arrangement. Read more »

She's a Pakistani tranny, Johnnies

Tranny of the Year (so far): The New York Times just published an article on Ali Saleem, better known to Pakistani prime time viewers as Begum Nawazish Ali, hostess of the wildly popular (at least among more secular Karachi residents) “Late Night Show With Begum Nawazish Ali.” A self-described transvestite who poses as a "flirty, teasing widow" who's obsessed with glamor and subtle political commentary, she somehow gets away with some amazing taboo-breaking she-ite on her weekly talk show Read more »

Will the McClatchy sale of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune bring Manhattanization to Minneapolis?

By Bruce B. Brugmann (B3)

Well, well. There's more of an odor to the McClatchy sale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune to a New York private equity firm than was originally reported. (See previous blogs.)

The Star Tribune reported coyly on Dec. Read more »

There she goes

Luke Thomas had the scoop first, and now SF Gate is reporting that indeed Annemarie Conroy has -- as the report puts it -- "resigned" from her $250,000 a year job in emergency services.

Of course, she really had no choice -- the supes had eliminated the position weeks ago.
