Here's the latest report Friday afternoon (Dec. 28, 2007) from our citizen reporter Carolyn Schmidt in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
By Carolyn Schmidt
Cedar Rapids, Iowa-- Seems that in small towns like Indianola, two campaign staffs may be working out of the same building, since there are more requests for office space than there are available buildings in some of these towns. The Clinton and Edwards campaigns are both working out of the same building in Indianola, according to the Des Moines Register. Driving into Indianola, you'll see a billboard-sized Edwards sign right next to a billboard-sized Clinton sign.
Until this election cycle, most of the campaign headquarters were in the cities, but this year they are also moving out to the more rural area. In Independence, Clinton and Obama staffs work out of the same building, separated only by a partition, and they share the same bathroom. While staffers from the two campaigns joke with each other about who works harder, they generally have a friendly relationship. "It's like a football rivalry," says Ray Walton, an Edwards campaign coordinator.
Hillary Clinton is going to be spending $20,000 for a two-minute TV commercial before the local news across Iowa the night before the caucuses. She'll make a final appeal for her candidacy, according to the Register. Hillary has also had her daughter Chelsea by her side this week as she campaigns, and Bill has been making his own round of campaign rallies on Hillary's behalf.
Biden interrupted his campaign appearance in Creston, IA yesterday to conduct remote interviews with national media on the turmoil in Pakistan. He spoke with MSNBC's Chris Matthews and also with CNN's Wolf Blitzer. He also held a news conference in Des Moines (as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, not as a presidential candidate) to say that he had twice urged Musharraf to provide a strong security detail for Benazir Bhutto and this was not done. But he does NOT blame Musharraf for Bhutto's death, saying, "Even if the security was not as I specifically recommended does not mean that it's rational to conclude that the government wanted to see her assassinated."
And finally, a new poll from Strategic Vision shows Obama at 30% in Iowa, Clinton at 29%, and Edwards at 28%. This, of course, was all before the assassination, which might make foreign policy expertise seem more important to Iowans.
It's getting interesting now that we're almost to D-Day.

Barack is the best candidate for president. Not only is he visionary, he is the only one who has made personal sacrifices for advancing his vision.
I trust him and he has my vote.
