This in from SFJAZZ's people (a total aside: I'm looking forward to Brad Mehldau, Jenny Scheinman, pictured below, as well as Seun Kuti, pictured above. And you know Allen Toussaint and Tinariwen are going to be awesome):
"Randall Kline, the Executive Artistic Director of SFJAZZ - the leading non-profit jazz organization on the West Coast and the presenter of the San Francisco Jazz Festival today announced the complete artist lineup for the 10th Anniversary SFJAZZ Spring Season. The unique and spectacular four-month-long concert series begins on March 6 and continues through June 21. The season will present some of the most illustrious names in jazz, world, and related music including McCoy Tyner, Branford Marsalis, Madeleine Peyroux, Bill Frisell’s Disfarmer Project, Ahmad Jamal, Jenny Scheinman, John Scofield and the Piety Street Band, Kayhan Kalhor and Brooklyn Rider, Tinariwen, Chris Potter Underground, Will Bernard, Mariza, CéU, Mingus Dynasty with John Handy, Allen Toussaint, Karrin Allyson, Idan Raichel, Michael Feinstein: the Sinatra Project, Brad Mehldau, Richard Bona and Lionel Loueke, Roy Hargrove, James Carter, Kenny Burrell, Michael Wolff, Hiromi’s Sonicbloom, and many others.
“'For 26 years, SFJAZZ has been guided by a simple principle: we absolutely love music—and we want to present it in the best possible context for all those who share our passion,' said Kline. 'In 2000, we took a huge step forward in that mission by launching the SFJAZZ Spring Season, marking our expansion into a year-round concert presenting organization. Over the last 10 years, the Spring Season has grown exponentially. This year we will present nearly 40 concerts over four months, purposefully matching each artist with the ideal venue for a high-quality listening experience. Our aim is to reflect the tighter, more culturally close-knit nature of today’s world, and the positively open-minded, "multi-culti" city that we call home - San Francisco.'

“'We are committed to diverse "thematic" programming across several genres beyond jazz,' exclaims Kline. This includes an immense range of artists from jazz to world music, instrumental to vocal, and traditional to cutting-edge contemporary.
"The Spring Season features six innovative and influential pianists in a variety of settings including Ahmad Jamal (4/4), McCoy Tyner (4/26), Brad Mehldau Duo with Matt Chamberlain and Solo (5/15, 16), Kenny Barron Trio (5/22), Michael Wolff Trio (6/13) and Hiromi’s Sonicbloom (6/19).
"Vocalists from around the world include Mariza from Portugal (5/2), CéU from Brazil (5/9) and the Maria Volonté Tango Jazz Ensemble from Argentina (5/31).
"Two swinging performances showcase new interpretations of the classic big band sound with Michael Feinstein: The Sinatra Project at Davies Symphony Hall (5/10) and a modern 'Battle of the Bands' between the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the Glenn Miller Orchestra (5/24).
"This collection of groups from Benin to the Balkans bring spirited and virtuosic sounds that bend borders. Artists include Israel’s Idan Raichel Project (3/28), Iran’s Kayhan Kalhor with Brooklyn Rider (4/5), Mali’s Tinariwen (4/16), Nigerian vocalist Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 (4/19), Cameroonian bassist Richard Bona teamed up with Beninese guitarist Lionel Loueke (5/17), and the Balkan experience of Goran Bregovic and the Wedding and Funeral Orchestra (6/21).
"These artists balance a profound respect for tradition with a probing search for new modes of expression: Branford Marsalis Quartet (3/29), Chris Potter Underground and the Ambrose Akinmusire Group (4/17) and Mingus Dynasty with John Handy (5/3).
"A collection of the world’s greatest guitarists including Bill Frisell’s Disfarmer Project (4/3), John Scofield and the Piety Street Band (4/11) and the double-bill of Kenny Burrell Quintet featuring Benny Green and Russell Malone Quartet (5/23).
"A collection of today’s most exciting and soulful vocalists: Madeleine Peyroux (3/27), Karrin Allyson (5/9) Kim Nalley Sings Nina Simone (6/6) and Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir (6/20).
"From the roots of New Orleans to the grooves of San Francisco and beyond, these artists bring an eclectic variety of funk, hip-hop, Americana and Afrobeat: Albino! (3/7), Jenny Scheinman (3/8), Will Bernard with John Medeski, Andy Hess and Stanton Moore (3/20), Adam Theis’s Brass, Bows & Beats with Lyrics Born (4/18) and the Allen Toussaint Quartet (6/20).
"Commissioned exclusively by SFJAZZ, the Collective’s 2009 repertoire will include new arrangements of the work of legendary pianist McCoy Tyner and original compositions by Collective members. The all-star roster includes tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano; alto saxophonist and recent MacArthur “Genius Grant” winner Miguel Zenón; trumpeter Dave Douglas; trombonist Robin Eubanks; pianist Renee Rosnes; bassist Matt Penman; and drummer Eric Harland (3/21, 22).
"The SFJAZZ Gala, an annual benefit for SFJAZZ artistic and education programs, will be held on Saturday, April 25 at the Four Seasons Hotel in San Francisco. This year’s Gala will honor legendary pianist McCoy Tyner. The festivities will include intimate performances by Tyner and members of the SFJAZZ Collective; the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars; surprise musical guests; a silent auction; and a gourmet-seated dinner in the elegant Four Seasons Veranda Ballroom followed by the 'SFJAZZ After Jam.' For information on tickets and tables, email gala@sfjazz.org or call (415) 283-0326. Individual tickets from $375 each, tables from $6,500.
