A sad week -- possibly, see below -- for queer punks and their admirers: beloved monthly Trans Am, which has torn up the floor of Club 8 (and confused quite a few Korean tourists expecting a campy tranny floorshow) for two whole years is calling it quits. Dangit!
The mad punk spirit will live on at weekly dragtastrophe Charlie Horse and Trans Am promoters Bill Picture and DJ Dirty Knees's other monthly joint Chrome, but Trans Am booked a ton of live talent that wouldn't have gotten as much exposure without them. Plus, there were always a few hot boys.
I asked Picture about the club's tearjerking demise and plans for the future (drag ball!). His comments after the jump:
"This Saturday is our two-year anniversay and, to be honest, we're ready for something new. So we're passing the live-rock-and-drag torch to [Charlie Horse's] Anna Conda and Lucy Borden. Their Herr-A-Chick night starts next month at the DNA Lounge.
We still think of Trans Am as our baby. Its success (along with our party aesthetic) not only allowed us to launch Chrome and do some fun one-offs, like Maricon, which was a fucking blast. It also allowed George and I to start our own production company, Pink Collar Events. That's been our focus of late.
Chrome, our little punk rock fag-dive, will continue on as a monthly. And we are considering a rock 'n' roll weekly in the Castro, something lowbrow and seedy-glamorous. The challenge is finding a venue that will have us. We tried it last summer but had to pull the plug before the party had even gotten off the ground (less than a month) because the owner stiffed us... and not in a good way.
Trans Am will continue on as a series of one-offs. For the first one (in early February) we're teaming up with [wild underground costume party] Beast. There'll be dress-up shenanigans (Beast-style), a live band, a man or two in a dress (and maybe a woman impersonating a man in a dress) and South of Market's very first drag ball. So start fiercing a look and practicing your walks. That's right, bitches... SoMa is Burning!"
