We're hearing from several sources that Energy 92.7, the agressively gay-friendly radio station that everyone loves or hates, has new owners.
Riley Manlapaz, the Guardian's promotions marketing manager, found this on Bebe Sweetbriar Facebook (Facebook being such a bastion of accuracy!) :
"From my understanding at 3pm today ENERGY 92.7 will no longer be the gay radio station we love. New owners will be changing the format, and all of our fav djs and radio personalities are going bye-bye....:-(
I heard this from someone who works for the station last night. We already knew it had been sold to a supposed homophobic owner....of course, no announcement has been or will be made by the new group until the changes go into affect. The mill has it that the new format will be some sort of music streaming that won't require the likes of a DJ. Let's see what happens! Wish for the best for the current 92.7 staff!"
Meanwhile, calls to Energy 92.7 staffers remain unanswered, and other sources say that folks were told to be out by 2 p.m. in which case they'll all be down at the local bar drowning their sorrows.
For those of you who are already feeling nostalgic, or possibly smugly satisfied, even though you don't yet know if the rumors are true, feel free to travel back in time to 2007 when the Guardian's Marke B wrote an exhaustive story about this "pure dance station", which you can read by clicking here.
As Marke B classically wrote back then, "There's no middle ground when it comes to Energy. I've been in cars where people have fought over it until blood spurted."

This is insane news! How will I ever justify buying a car now if the only radio station that I listen to doesn't exist?! ....OMG someone has to do something! There is a FB page already set up to help save the station... JOIN IT HERE: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=136138065746&ref=mf

WOW! Even the Wikipedia page for Energy 92.7 has been updated (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KNGY)
It's now known as KREV

This SUCKS! Was living in LA for two years where there are NO good radio stations. So happy to return to SF and Energy earlier in the year. I guess it's off to Sirius Satellite Radio and dance music there. Who wants to listen to the same tired old songs from the 80's & 90's all the time that is mostly the only other option in SF. What a shame. Hopefully someone will revive it on another station.

Well, I have to say I'm gobsmacked. I noticed the change around 9.15pm, with "The Revolution" stingers voiced in tragically macho fashion...
OK, there were times I snapped off Energy in irritation (like when they played that damned "When Love Takes Over" song for the 40th time in an hour) but I felt like this SF station was my own lil' gang of girl's-best-friend gay pals, a radio station I knew for a fact the Folks Back Home could never handle, and I loved them for it.
No warning, no nothing. It's a shock. I've switched over to KUSF, and while I respect their efforts, their programming can be patchy, especially on weekends.
Energy was reliably silly, vapid, sexy, shallow, nervy, and celebratory by turns. They were the friend who was always trying to cheer me up, if not always by the most intellectual means. We all need an Energy in our lives.
They were too good to last. Farewell and respect!

I love me some Fernando and Greg!!!
I was so shocked that the radion station was just snatched from under these guys feet. What a shame! As that current radion station "The So called Revolution" plays no dance music. I'm so tired of hearing radion stations playing the same old tired music, over and over. This is one of the reasons that I listened to 92.7 Energy, because this radio station played music you cannot here anywhere else.
Fernando and Greg you make me laugh in the mornings. At this point with out you guys to listen to, radio stinks!!!
Much Love Greg and Fernando!!! I will miss you both, especially hearing Fernando's laugh, and Gregs calls from his parents, and just listenng to you both in general...
Many Thanks,
Val
