Starfucker
The Portland, Ore., combo with the oh-so-naughty moniker has somewhat innocuous origins: Josh Hodges started out with just a borrowed drum set, loop pedal, and a mic - one-off, one-man entertainment for a house party. Now, with the addition of three bandmates, Starfucker is busy reproducing the 8-bit electro pop-dance punk off its mini-album, Jupiter (Badman).

Nite Trax: The Glass

You may be worn out by indie dance acts that have "glass" in their name -- as well as those with "crystal," "soundsystem," and any kind of cute furry animal -- but the UK's The Glass have just released a summer anthem, about dancing outside in summer, that deserves to be as big as I hope it will be. The video is bananas good as well.

SFBG: So right now you’re multitasking, printing out flight info for your tour. Is flying an issue for you? I’m just looking at the crashed plane in the artwork for Yours Truly, the Commuter.

Jason Lytle: Ummm, I’m actually OK with flying – I’m a lot better with flying than a lot of people I know. I guess if you’re looking at the artwork - I do have a problem with airplanes landing in my front yard.

Pop-pop-Poppins with Fagottron

Writing about electronic music in this Age Of Everything Always Available seems to be more and more an exercise in nostalgia. Artists are caught up mousing over the pull-down menu of the past, widgeting it into today's latest technology -- especially in the case of video mashups. (A similar-type thing happened with the debut of the CD, when the past was rummaged through for reissue-mania, and, as the Guardian's Johnny Ray Huston has pointed out, reissues still hold dollar-sway and carry much label cred in the record industry). Earlier this year, I attempted to fathom how Israeli YouTube mashup genius Kutiman was working the nostalgia tip -- not in the literally referential, crate-digging manner of DJ Shadow, but in a melancholic, sampladelic way all his own.

Now -- joy of joys, for real -- we have the latest video mashup by one of Kutiman's indisputable forebears, Fagottron. This, you cannot deny the literal nostalgia of. Not just because he's tapping directly into the mid-90s heyday of electronica -- but because he's freaking sampling the Disney movies of yesteryear. "The track is composed of a sine wave bass, custom drum sequences, and sounds recorded from the Disney film Mary Poppins," the YouTube more info box relays, deliciously. Funny, that was going to be my epitaph.

And Fagy's not just unleashing his dizzying Avid skills on the super-famous flicks (although I'd love to see his version of Ariel) -- here's a couple he did two years ago that took me back to those misty "movie afternoons" in the grade-school gymansia of my youthfulness, albeit in slightly freakier form:

Memorial Day weekend - the wind is down, and the moment has come to break out the hibachi, dust off those sassy hot pants, and kick back for at least a day or three. And of course, there's more worthy music to fit in there, in between the sunbathing, cookie-baking, and electroclashing.

Fischerspooner

TV on the Radio and Dirty Projectors

How now Chow Nasty? The local combo not on for Bay to Breakers

There are a few things you can count on in Ez Eff: the big tree goes up in Union Square every Xmas, summer will be freakin' freezing west of the Park Presidio fog line, and Chow Nasty will bring the boogie to the wackies walking, running, and huffing in Bay to Breakers each year.

So what happened? First word had it the band was rocking it up as usual at the corner of Hayes and Webster on Sunday, May 17. Then today, according to the shopkeep at the corner market, the group will not be making its date out front, validating all the zany goings-on in that fine every-day-is-a-par-tay SF tradition. Explanation, guys? And band dormancy is no excuse when it comes to those lil' reminders of only-in-the-citay goofery.

There's a laptop in the orchestra!

Everybody panic. Don't worry, electronic-symphonica mastermind Mason Bates, who I rave about in this week's issue, isn't gonna freak peeps out. But seriously, do not miss the premier of his orchestral suite for full orchestra and laptop, The B-Sides, which he'll be performing for three nights with the ever-game SF Symphony, Wed/20, Fri/22, Sat/23. After Friday night's performance (free with ticket!) you'll get ushered into a really cool secret space by Davies Symphony Hall for an afterparty, featuring Mason's Mercury Soul project, which kicks ambient-like trip-hop ass and will feature himself behind the decks, as well as some live, avant-garde surprises (and hottie conductor Benjamin Shwartz, *swoon*). If you haven't been to the symphony, or if you're in the mood for something spectacular oracular, this is the time to go.

Here's two views of Mason, aka DJ Masonic, at Carnegie Hall with the YouTube Symphony Orchestra in April, debuting the "Wharehouse Medicine" portion of The B-Sides.

I would be totally, regrettably remiss if I didn't also pump Bates' co-performer on the program, the heartbreakingly talented and just all around fierce Yuja Wang, who'll be performing Prokofiev's Piano Concerto #2, which at around the seven-minute-mark will honestly start to kill you with beauty. Girl's got skills.

Also featured: the majestically haunting, almost-4AD-foretelling Fourth Symphony by Sibelius, who's all the rage among young turk composers these days.

Nite Trax: White Warp bleep

In the current issue of the Guardian, I have a little devilish fun with white labels and tell a few possibly apocryphal tales of foundational electronic music label Warp Records' genesis. Before I multimedially augment that article a bit, here's a spectral white label that really calls up the toe-tingling ghost of the unknown in my third ear:

Reese, "Power Bass"

The 1990 white label rumbler above, whose B-side apparently played inside out, was produced by Detroit techno god Kevin "Master Reese" Saunderson -- he later released it under his E-Dancer guise. (When I hung with Kevin at last year's Detroit Electronic Music Festival, I believe he was drinking Black Label, however.)

My own former prize possession white label turned out to be "The Green Man" by Shut Up and Dance that I snagged from Detroit's amazing Buy Rite Records in 'round 1991-- somehow an unlabelled test press had found it's way from London and into my bin. Below is a vid of a promo copy version. Warning: Never, ever, let go of your records. I could retire a bit if I had this slice of vinyl on me now ....

Whole lotta Loquat: the SF indie rockers kick off their du Nord residency Thursday

Talk about an unrelenting burst of creativity: San Francisco indie rock band Loquat will be going for broke with its May residency at Cafe du Nord. Vocalist-guitarist Kylee Swenson told me the group is attempting to make each show special, with visuals arranged by the mysterious Kernel Panic, special guests like Raul Sanchez of Penny Arcade, and special DJs like Ted of BAGel Radio. “I just hope it works!” she said by phone. “It could be a total disaster!” As we spoke, Loquat was still tweaking the blend of performers and stage sets.

The group hasn't been slacking on working on music, either: it has 20 songs written for its next full-length - though don't expect Loquat to share its latest tunes yet. "We’re still in the incubator stage," Swenson explained.

Bay rap vets and raucous rock sprats - it all goes splat this week. I'm guessing you'll find plenty of trouble to get into - and musical artistry to appreciate - when you're not busy downing scrump-dilly-icious (and cheap!) pastor tacos at the Gallo Giro taco truck at 23rd and Treat.

Ballad of Marianne Dissard

Champs Elysees cool cuddles up with dustbowl derring-do: it's an unlikely union but it works beautifully on Marianne Dissard's self-released 2008 debut, L'entredeux. The filmmaker behind the Giant Sand documentary, Drunken Bees, Dissard played the silky seductress to Joey Burns' easy dupe in Calexico's cowboy noir "Ballad of Cable Hogue." L'entredeux sees her donning assorted new chapeaux with help from co-writer and producer Burns. Count on the chanteuse to smoke up the room with her fivepiece when she stops at the Hemlock Tavern on April 29.

Beautiful losers and dour dreamers who can't make that date will likely dig the 12-track L'entredeux. Calexico's John Convertino pitches in on drums, along with Willie Nelson contributor Mickey Raphael on harmonica and Tin Hat Trio player Rob Burger on piano, accordion, orchestron, cimbalom, and organ. Now planted in Tucson dust, the French native apparently found plenty of common ground with Burns in the making of this music: the music of Nick Drake, Serge Gainsbourg, and Django Reinhardt as well as the films of Sam Peckinpah. They save the violence for the future recordings - this is music for hot, hazy, lazy days.

Snap Sounds: Camera Obscura

Morrissey may have crapped out of his stint at the Paramount, Belle and Sebastian are probably off looking for 20 more band members -- and whither the classic Bluebells, I ask you?

But at least on this overcast break from yesterday's heatwave we have the 13-year-old and much overlooked Scottish popsters Camera Obscura -- no, not this camera obscura, although the music has the same ethereal shimmer -- to keep us melancholically sunny with their new, lushly orchestrated My Maudlin Career (4AD). Somehow the 11 slightly countrified gems on this release seem like the ones that got away from both Neko Case and Rough Trade ...

Sex-children of the Throb

Throbbing Gristle, "Discipline" live at Kezar, 1981

"Like always I persuaaa-aade you." My audiophile pals have been burbling for weeks about Throbbing Gristle's return to the Bay Area -- an event of enormous sonic-historical magnitude that both Brandon Bussolini and Nicole Gluckstern write about in this week's issue. And they've mostly been taken by the series of vids recorded at Kezar Stadium ("the stadium of dead souls") in 1981 that documents the raw, uninhibited mind-warp of the group at the time -- a perfect tonic for our still-obsessed post-punk indie-bop era. It's pretty amazing, and I'm loving the obvs tripped-out audience. Also, it looks to have much more in common with composer John Adams' Berkeley music-concrete happenings than the overloaded, multimedia Wax Trax spectaculars that industrial would soon veer into, livewise.

The above extended cataclysm, plus this one below by Germany's Liaisons Dangereuses from 1982, tells a seedy, sweaty, and dirty-sexy industrial story, with a space for women even ("are you ready boys, are you ready girls?"), that I wish had been pin-patched and bedazzled onto Haight Street kids' jackets rather than the hypersteroidal/paranoid-pop Skinny Puppy-Nitzer Ebb-Ministry one (and hey, doesn't Depeche Mode have a new album out?)

Liaisons Dangereuses, "Los Niños Del Parque"

It's a wonder to me how all those macho mid-80s big-time industrial acts could simultaneously be so testosteronal and yet so castrated. Maybe it was all the trying too hard (and it kind of happened again in the 90s with, ew, rap-rock). But, you know, I shaved off my devil lock and fled the industrial dance floor once KMFDM's "Control" became inescapable. Now that was torture, even though now I find them quite adorable. It'll be very interesting to see what kind of crowd shows up at the TG show on Thursday, to say the least, and whether they'll have the spikes to ride the experimental thrust into polysexual purgatory, industrial's true Valhalla (not hell at all), with barest, brief release.

Grass Widow's harmonious post-punk tension is fostered below SF street level, in a former meat locker containing, among other things, a very charming quilt with the band's name patched into it. In anticipation of an impending record release -- the band plays Thursday at ATA -- I met there with bass player Hannah Lew and drummer Lillian Maring (guitarist and trumpet player Raven Mahon was overseas), who, although living far apart — Maring is on the East Coast at present — were clearly very happy to be together.

"It's not like there are any dispensable characters," explains Lew. After the dissolution of Shitstorm, Lew's former band with Mahon, the two started playing together in 2007 with Maring, who was in the city for the summer from Washington state. Though Maring went back up north for a bit, she says she quickly returned and the trio "got really serious" — serious enough to tour the U.S. the following summer after cranking out a wonderful demo CD-R/ cassette that makes up most of their upcoming self-titled 12-inch on the local Make a Mess label.

Freakin' with Dan Deacon

I first saw Dan Deacon perform at Oberlin College's venue the ’Sco, a den of nascent creativity that eventually brought me to a city sometimes referred to by the same three-letter abbreviation. Deacon was there, balding and bearded, his glasses taped to his head, his muffin-top iced by a bright pink T. He set up his mad scientist's table of electronics in the audience's usual domain. Different colored cords sprang out in every direction and there were multiple mics for his one-man show. Lit by a neon green skull, Deacon began stretching, then implored the audience to stretch. They did.

Not only did we all stretch with Deacon, we danced with Deacon. For a generation that has been taught that to move is to be judged — or whatever excuse keeps scenesters so static — such an act is similar to the miracle of the Virgin Mary getting pregos. Deacon's inhibition-less philosophy was infectious: not only were the undergrads dancing, they were willing to participate in a high-five conga line and compete in a dance-off.

Although the complexities of Deacon's music become clearer when heard on an iPod, the experience verges on seizure-inducing. Live, the same music becomes hypnotic. Like his earlier work, Deacon's newest album Bromst (Carpark) is as much a singular composition as a collection of tracks, which should make it exhilarating to encounter. In concert, he has arranged for it to be played by a 15-piece ensemble. Now that he's decidedly bigger — in band, popularity, and girth — it's hard to predict how the intimacy and audience participation aspects of his performance will be affected. But it is sure to be a blast. And a bromst. (Deacon said he made up the word for his album title because it doesn't have a meaning and he likes the way it sounds.)

Snap Sounds: Two San Franciscos

Two recent releases, both based on the Bay by Bay favorites. The first, "Young San Francisco" by SF's Boy in Static, aka Alexander Chen and Kenji Ross, from their new album, Candy Cigarette (Fake Four Inc & Circle Into Square) is way too cute -- check out their new "East Bay to Back Bay" XLR8R podcast mix for a great listen to some more new, slightly twee West Coast indie pop (loving "To the Sea" by Portland's Mint Julep).

Boy in Static, "Young San Francisco"

The second recent track focusing on the Bay is by SF hip-hop stalwart Kero One, "Welcome to the Bay," off his sophomore disc, Early Believers (Plug Label). I really wanted to like this one more -- I've been a fan for a while, and Kero's def got the chops, working with everyone from Talib Kweli to Mark Farina -- but it seemed a tad too polished for me, despite the nice groove. Still, it's a breezy listen for a steamy day. From what I've heard of Early Believers it'll be a perfect summer BBQ collection.

Something both of these songs have in common is a young Asian American perspective on the homebase. Kero's is especially poignant, talking about why his parents came here at a time when "words like 'chink' were teachable." Really feeling the latitude of historical perceptions coming forth in two distinct tunes.

Super Ego: Fun with electro-kuduro

That unflappably chipper "progressive kuduro" Portuguese foursome, Buraka Som Sistema -- who I write about in my latest Super Ego clubs column -- may have been joking when they said they based their truly wonderful smash "Kalemba (Wegue-Wegue)" track on a misheard lyric from an old house mix of More Kante's late 1987 classic "Yeke Yeke." Just for fun, here's "Kalemba," then the Afro Acid mix of "Yeke Yeke" (whose stock has risen enormously since techno god Richie Hawtin has claimed it as a signature tune to close out his sets), and afterwards some genuine Angolan kuduro from rapper Puto Lilas.

You can see in the Puto Lilas that the original kuduro form recounts sprawling tales of street life, something Buraka truncates to focus on a more danceable takeaway. (Incidentally, Buraka's name comes from a misspelling of Buraca -- a suburb, or frequesia, of Lisbon. And "som sistema" is also a mishearing, a bastardization, this time of "soundsystem." Buraka's global-minded dance floor antics really are subtexted by a kind of "map of mishearing.")

PS: If you dig the Afro Acid, the man behind it, basically the originator of acid house, DJ Pierre, will be at Vessel on Thu/23 with his Acid Afro project, 22 years after the "Yeke Yeke" mix came out, yikey yikes!

But "Work" might be Junior Boys' best composition, and "Sneak a Picture" is simply sweet. A reward for those who care enough to dig: the title and lyrics braid through the life and work of Canadian animator Norman McLaren.

Paging Vangelis: the songwriter and studio whiz behind Sally Shapiro (and official Glass Candy remixer) goes new age, replete with the requisite peaceful, tranquil blurry cover art. I'm not as enthused about this as I am about the news that a new Shapiro album is due out this year. Loaded with music, Agebjörn's site also links to the site for Diskokaine, a label which put out some early Shapiro songs. I say this because DIskokaine's site has a great Atari- or Commodore-era look -- and is annoying as hell.

1980s duo Stereo's criss-cross sunglasses put Kanye's Venetian shades to shame. Minimal Wave delivers once again with this synth jam gem. I'm on the lookout for another recent Minimal Wave release, a vinyl-only collection by Linear Movement. But Stereo -- not to be confused with Kompakt figurehead Wolfgang Voigt's early recording project of the same name -- has surprising songwriting chops. My fave track might be "Nowhere in the Island," which uses the echo vocal effect so beloved by circa-1983 new romantic acts to great effect. It includes saxophone and yet still has a potent air of melancholy. I wonder if these two French guys every rubbed pointy shoulders with Bernard Fevre of Black Devil Disco Club.

Endtroducing ... Kutiman

In the future when vids are vinyl, and vinyl is -- what? La Chanson de Roland, maybe -- people might claim that Kutiman, the Israeli Vegas Pro genius who collages up backwater YouTube vids into breathtaking electronic atmospheric joyrides (see the complete work at http://thru-you.com), was the DJ Shadow of the '00s.

I think those people would be wrong (and there are already a number of them). Searching through the all the minor dreck of YouTube to fish out suitable usable samples and build them into destabilized microsymphonies can surely be compared to Shadow's impeccable crate-diving technique. And the dense sound both derive from their purely sample-driven compositions elicits a similar melancholy (why is that?). But Shadow traded in rarity nostalgia -- who the hell else had that 78, man? -- whereas Kutiman's brilliant corners are purely of the moment and completely accessible to all. Except for one of them, now set to "private," ha.

Kutiman is also way more international in musical scope than Shadow -- something perhaps more necessary in our globalized age, that Shadow could only hint towards in his Endtroducing... '90s heyday -- which brings Kutiman more in line with the likes of that other frequent Bay boy Amon Tobin, another sample-based innovator who opened the West's ears to a different native music contextuality and who eschewed nostalgia in favor of up-to-the-minute headtrip breaks.

Don't fear Bonnie "Prince" Billy - 'Beware' marks his most accessible effort to date

After multiple career tangents, name changes, and rambles hither and yon, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, ne Will Oldham, appears to have finally arrived. The accolades are pouring in from NPR to small-town daily newspapers -- a marvel when one considers the fact that the Louisville, Ky., post-punk scene that Oldham sprang from was so roundly ignored during its most vital years in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, when Squirrel Bait, Slint, and later Oldham and brothers Ned and Paul performed as Palace (Brothers/Songs/Music).

The most accessible, clean, and least eccentric recording to date from Oldham, Beware might be considered the recording in which the songwriter assumes his rightful place in the current rock canon as the music-maker who prefigured the so-called freak/out-folk scene and the enabler and encourager of such talents as Joanna Newsom and Dawn McCarthy.

This time, his roving sensibility finds its soothingly smooth fit with help from Josh Abrams of Town and Country, Emmett Kelly of Cairo Gang, Akita Youssefi, Jon Langford of the Mekons, Rob Mazurek of Isotope 217, and renowned pedal steel session player Greg Leisz, among others - likely his most accomplished set of contributors to date. Still, despite Beware’s full-bodied, country-soul sound, I feel almost nostalgic for the humanizing glitchy folk Palace and early Bonnie “Prince” Billy was known for - perhaps that’s just my indie rock values rearing their scruffy heads.

Seems to me, though, that Skin Graft's Pre combines squealing girly vocals with propulsive, clanging post-punk in a way that I'm sure SF kids can get with. Fri/27, 9:30 p.m., $8. Starfucker

Super Ego: Relight my fire, Francois K.

I just came upon this 2k7 vid of the best-club-ever-after-Paradise-Garage Body and Soul tour in Tokyo. And I don't know if it's the beauty of DJ Joe Clausell's knob-tweaking, the pain of the recent Depression, the gay-soul-gorgeousness of Dan Hartman and Loleatta Holloway's barnstormer duet, or the sight of hundreds of off-their-nut Japanese boppers singing "Relight My Fire" -- but I'm bursting into tears.

Body & Soul Live in Tokyo Open Air 2007

Those kids are so amped up that by the time of the breakdown ("I'm strong enough to walk on through the night") they can't shout any louder. Srsly, it's time for a house comeback. There's already a couple of underground roving house revivals going down in NYC, and Body & Soul itself will rock Webster Hall there this Sunday. Let's pick it up SF!

We could do worse that pack Vessel on Thursday night for a very rare appearance by way-more-than-legendary Body & Soulmate Francois K.

Let 'em roam: SF singer-songwriters Anna Laube and Davis Jones raise their voices at Hotel Utah

The Hotel Utah Saloon promises a lovely showcase for Bay Area voices Thursday, March 12: four local singer-songwriters will hit the stage, all of whom are deserving of serious attention. Berkeley vocalist Courtney Nicole and 515-representing folkie Rebecca Cross will bring their savvy strumming and thoughtful lyricism to the evening's proceedings. Joining the roster will be two other songwriters who call San Francisco home: Anna Laube and Davis Jones. Both have excellent new CDs out - be sure to visit the merch table between sets!

Laube describes herself as a bit of a roamer in her press materials, and that wandering spirit tends to flavor her just-released second album, Pool All the Love * Pool All the Knowledge (Gingko), a comfortingly rootsy collection of songs that evoke memories of road trips and visits to quieter, less bustling locales than her current place of residence.

Hip bone to knee bone: Fujiya and Miyagi to bust out contagious blip-rock at the Independent

On first listen, you wouldn't think Fujiya and Miyagi were composed of a couple of mild-mannered British blokes. The name says Japanese, the influences say krautrock, but the music, defying all attempts at ethnic pidgeon-holing, just sounds weird.

Formed in 2000 after David Best (he's Fujiya) and Steve Lewis (and he's Miyagi) met warming benches at the local Sunday league football kick-around, the duo released their debut in 2002 before dropping abruptly off the screen for about half a decade. Then came Transparent Things in 2006, and, following that, effusive praise concerning the band's craft by Pitchfork and Mojo.

Noise Pop: A blurry look back

For a minute there I became enraged at the thought I was missing out on the latest drink sensation. Everyone had these shiny cartons in their hands as my mind raced, fantasizing about all the possibilities. What could that be? Oddly, my head had me convinced it was some sort of coconut concoction. No, wait, what’s that trendy fruit right now? Acai berry! That had to be it.

After all, wine in a box had long since become passe. My jealousy abated only when I realized it was merely a carton of Plant it Water. Those things were everywhere. Still, the evening wasn’t about sponsorship. No, this festival was about the music. Now just a blur of a memory, bars, clubs, and venues alike opened their doors last week to welcome musicians (and music types who like to live vicariously through them) for Noise Pop’s 17th showcase in weirdo San Francisco and beyond. After 'Sunrise': Kath Bloom makes it to the coast

The setting: Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a young American, and Céline (Julie Delpy), a young French woman, have just met on a train. The duo disembark in Vienna, where they spend the day discussing life and love and getting to know each other. In this scene they are in a record store filled floor to ceiling with vinyl.

Jesse: This place is pretty neat.

Céline: There is even a listening booth. (Céline pulls out a record embellished with a black-and-white profile. The name spread across the top is indiscernible in the distance.) Have you ever heard of this singer?

Can a simple punctuation change make such a big difference? Serious business for the wordsmiths and grammarians of the world, but I'd reckon maybe also for Emil Svanängen, the sweet falsetto behind the Loney Dear moniker. Up until recently, the Swedish vocalist had been known for two things in particular: sunshine-kissed happy-pop and a clunky ol' comma dropped thud-like in the middle of his alias.

Alas, Loney, Dear is no more - having bid b-bye to that pesky punctuation mark, he also seems to have reined in the giddiness quite a bit, as documented on his latest, Dear John. Intended as “the final piece in a five-album puzzle,” the disc offers considerably more melancholia than before, along with a cleaner, more intimate production.

Noise Pop: Take two with Thao - the SF singer-songwriter on watermelons, crazy Eights, and the 'burbs

There’s a lot more to Thao Nguyen of Thao with the Get Down Stay Down than meets the eye: watermelons, missing cowboy boots, wash-and-fold duties, and missing mini-vans. Here’s more of a talk with her; for the rest of this interview, go here. Nguyen performs as part of Noise Pop ‘09 on Feb. 26.

SFBG: You just got back from Portland? How’s the recording of the new album going?

Thao Nguyen: It’s a pretty slow process. Everything has to be of a higher standard than you’re used to. With our producer, he’s really into details. It’s still Tucker [Martine, who recorded We Brave Bee Stings and All (Kill Rock Stars)]. He’s awesome. He has an incredible ear and has higher standards than I’m used to. He’s always asking me for more.

That voice: Bay bluesman John Németh entreats 'Love Me Tonight'

Given the frugality of the blues as an art form, it seems only fair that I introduce Bay Area harmonica-slinging bluesman John Németh without a single wasted word: the man can sing. Sure, he breathes plenty of soul and fire into that harp of his, but ultimately it's his voice which makes the most indelible impact - moving nimbly from growl to howl to full-bellied hoot 'n' holler, sometimes within the same bar, it's a tremendous instrument.

Even more impressive: the vocalist, only in his early 30s, delivers with a level of authority expected from someone much older. Considering that the blues places such a deep emphasis on breadth of life experience, Németh's ability to sound older than his actual age is a valuable asset. That being said, it's his extensive vocal range which gets noticed first; coming across as a young scrapper in one moment and a wizened front-stoop sage in the next, he certainly can surprise.

Upbeat indie: Scissors for Lefty and Vox Jaguars prowl Bottom of the Hill

I’m willing to bet that on a wall somewhere in this city of ours there’s a message emblazoned in loopy, florid handwriting purring, “For a good time, call Scissors for Lefty," because there is nothing about their exuberant, glammed-up indie sound that suggests otherwise. The San Franciscan group’s newest self-released EP, Consumption Junction (Pepper Street Music), evokes a night-is-young idealism that speaks to the party kid in all of us.

The tight set of athemic, body-moving tunes opens up with “Ornamental," a song sporting a giant, lung-busting chorus interspersed with ennui-tinged lead vocals by Bryan Garza and bullet-train drums. “Long Distant Love” sounds like the Cure drank a whole lotta Love Potion Number 9 and highlights a buoyant, Unicorns-esque keyboard melody that dips and bends to jaunty, optimistic lyrics about the pitfalls of loving someone a world away.

Appleseed Cast gives off a mesmerizing glow

Just like Robert Johnson before them, the members of the Appleseed Cast have wandered down the dusty, corpse-littered back trails and offered up their souls at the crossroads. Just imagine those byways littered with furiously touring indie rock bands and the crossroads placed at the junction of emo and post-rock, rather than the Delta blues and early rock 'n' roll.

Having perfected its cross-pollinated style of dreamy guitar rock, the Appleseed Cast has shifted from the overtly emo vocals of previous albums to ones that are now awash in gauzy distortion. Their musical landscapes are drawn in more lush detail than before. Nowhere are these improvements heard more clearly than on Sagarmatha (Vagrant), which comes out Feb. 17.

I got the tip from Guardian contributor George Chen that he'll be appearing at an evening of readings and stand-up comedy by Sam McPheeters, George Chen, Deana Uribe at Adobe Book Shop on Feb. 20. Word on the performers:

"Sam McPheeters was born in Ohio in 1969 and raised in upstate New York. He is the former lead singer of Born Against and Wrangler Brutes, a founding member of Men's Recovery Project, and the owner of the now defunct Vermiform Records. He lives in California with his wife, Tara, and their 11 cats.

'Core corps: Wildbirds and Peacedrums take flight with 'Heartcore,' opens for Lykke Li

Wildbirds and Peacedrums' pristine and primal music is a hybrid of reverent pop, bare blues, and ecstatic soul music with a twist of pitch and tone that creates an undefinable sonic experience. This sparse expressive pop by Scandinavian vocalist Mariam Wallentin and drummer Andreas Werliin bouncingly builds with just enough simple percussion and vocal intensity to allow space and silence, like unanswerable questions, to hang between sound, asking to be filled in by the listener’s interest and intent.

Powered by feeling-infused drums and goosebump-invoking vocals, W and P’s debut, Heartcore (Leaf, 2008), is a powerful, emotive invitation into the minds of these music school drop-outs/masters.

Lush 'n' loopy: Juana Molina to blow out her sound with a full band in SF

Prepare to be riveted - loop-and-layer-loving Argentine experimentalist Juana Molina will be bringing her bewilderingly intricate electronic/acoustic hybrids to the stage of the Great American Music Hall Friday, Feb. 13.

If you've wondered how the impossibly layered constructions of her recordings could ever translate to the live setting - here's your chance. Having caught her solo Swedish Hall performance from a couple of years ago, I can attest to her ability to mesmerize. Armed with an acoustic guitar and a battery of electronics and effects pedals, she didn't merely perform her songs - instead, she built them from the ground up, laying down basic components at the beginning of each song and gradually adding them together one by one.

Feeling the chill: Hauschka's 'Snowflakes' tugs and putters

Sometimes, a listener can correctly infer a lot from an album’s artwork. The cover of Snowflakes and Carwrecks, the follow-up EP to last year’s full-length Ferndorf (130701), maintains a Bauhaus-meets-art deco style, but substitutes a winter scene for the sunset and bather that graced the LP. Taking descriptions of Ferndorf at face value risked overheated nostalgia - the album’s inspiration was, after all, composer Volker Bertelmann’s upbringing in rural Germany.

Actually listening to it was something else altogether: these compositions for prepared piano and chamber orchestra ride the minimalist pulse of non-suck Philip Glass minimalism with worthy little melodies that aspire to the repetitive potency of Erik Satie’s Vexations or the Buddha Machine. Neither snobby or pandering, the album was the sort that’s easy to imagine, but hard to find.

Accordingly, it’s the sort of album that’s easier to praise than make time for. I play it during shifts at a café, and as noncontroversial background music I can say it’s nonpareil, but also the sort of music that feels vulgar next to a decent amount of movement and exertion. “Heimat,” the full-length's high point of contemplativeness, sounds best suited for playing at extremely low volume in a sad but dignified brasserie.

So Fucked Up: more from the Toronto punkers

I don’t care what his bandmates might say about him - Fucked Up vocalist Damian Abraham, 29, is a mensch. I kid because I love. For more from this interview, go to this week’s Sonic Reducer. Here’s the best of the rest of this phone interview with Abraham, then in the middle of a six-hour drive to New Orleans with his group, which dwells in Toronto - a fact that Abraham is downright proud of (“Born and raised - a lot of the Broken Social people and all those other bands moved downtown from other places”).

SFBG: The Chemistry of Common Life is such a great record. What did the band intend to do when it started to work on it?

Damian Abraham: We knew what we didn’t want to do. We didn’t want to rush it, and we wanted to try some new things. We were a lot more comfortable when we sat down to do the second record. Mike [Haliechuk, lead guitarist] e-mailed me and said, “I want you to write lyrics about light and positive things.”

You don't own Lesley Gore - but you can see her at Yoshi's next week

I"ve always known of her music, but a few months ago and admittedly after watching John Water’s Hairspray for the first time in its entirety, I became eerily obsessed with Lesley Gore's song "You Don't Own Me." That song is great. Almost immediately I bought one of her compilation CDs, shamelessly playing the track on repeat.

I guess there were hints of pessimism in some of those early '60s hits although they maintained their poppy playfulness (i.e., “Judy’s Turn to Cry” and “It’s My Party”). It's hard to believe Gore recorded them at the tender age of 16. Oddly enough, Quincy Jones of Thriller fame was responsible for many of her early gems - which could explain their broad appeal production-wise.

Beyond apathy: Todd Snider to deliver 'Peace Queer' musings at Great American

Nashville singer-songwriter Todd Snider has been making folk-rock croons since 1994, but his last three albums have shown an evolving sound that lends itself more towards protest cries than an apathetic hipster generation is used to hearing.

His most recent eight-track EP, Peace Queer (Mega Force, 2008), springs an attack on Dubya (it was released on Oct. 14 before we knew who his predecessor would be), war, and the state of the nation with clever, literate lyrics that Snider says are meant for him (“I share them with you because they rhyme / I did not do this to change your mind about anything / I did this to ease my own mind about everything”). That statement seems as true as this non-commercial album - in title, cover, distribution strategy, spoken word pieces, and length - and reinforces Snider’s sincerity.

Never fit in: Cynic mixes it up with extreme metal and avant-garde jazz

Though nurtured in the humid birthplace of modern death metal, Miami, Florida's Cynic never really fit in with its more brutal peers. Despite having played on Death's pivotal album Human (Relativity/Sony, 1991), childhood friends Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert suffused their own material with the swirling melodic experimentation of '70s prog rock and fusion, creating in Cynic a unique hybrid of extreme metal and avant-garde jazz.

Masvidal's guitar playing was filled with haunting melody and lithe fretboard runs that drew on scales and modes not traditionally associated with metal, and his vocals, sung through a vocoder, achieved an eerie, otherworldly quality that fit the music impeccably. Reinert's drumming abandoned the blast-beat bludgeon that defined the extreme metal of the time in favor of a creative, musical approach that fleshed out the band's experimental sound.

Early demos laid the groundwork for their 1993 album Focus (Roadrunner), which quickly became a cult classic among those interested in metal that was challenging and inventive. Such listeners were few in number, however, and the lack of enthusiasm, coupled with the travails of the music industry and the destruction wreaked by Hurricane Andrew, led to the band's break-up in 1994.

Masvidal and Reinert continued to collaborate, and in 2006, they announced that Cynic was re-forming. After playing a number of European festival gigs in the summer of 2007, the group entered the studio the record the long-awaited follow-up to Focus. Traced in Air was released in 2008 on the French label Seasons of Mist, and the outfit has recently begun a full U.S. tour as direct support for Swedish tech-metal titans Meshuggah. I reached Masvidal by phone as he waited to take the stage on the tour's second stop.

Folk-metal growls: SF's Slough Feg lays it out at the Eagle

Coupling the two seemingly opposed sonic realms of folk and metal into one paganism-loving, mythology-obsessed subgenre, folk metal is a sphere of music that enjoys a healthy European following. Across the Atlantic in San Francisco, Slough Feg are fiercely holding down the fort.

Taking cues from genre pioneers Skyclad and fantasy metalists Iron Maiden, Slough Feg have been serving up face-melting solos, gut-churning bass lines, and otherworldly lyrics on the same plate since the '90s. Songs are woven like elaborate sagas, with vocalist Michael Scalzi growling operatically about war, immortality, the cruel hands of fate, and other ancient plagues on the human psyche, while “Don” Angelo Tringali propels them into epic territory with his blistering breakdowns. They lay it down at the Eagle Tavern Thursday with fellow city dwellers Orb of Confusion, but you better watch yourself; this brand of music makes starting a midweek drinking binge seem like a good idea.

'Hold On': Marianne Faithfull's most recent cover comp is worth the dig

As gifted a songwriter as she has proven herself over the years, Marianne Faithfull has always been a flawless interpreter of other people's compositions. Singing cover material, after all, was how the pop icon started out, upon being prodded into a musical career in 1964 by Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham.

Her first single, "As Tears Go By" was a Jagger/Richards composition - the equally famous Rolling Stones version wouldn't appear for another year. Back then, Faithfull had a delicate, songbird-like voice, and much of her mid-'60s material consisted of lilting, swaying string-laden treatments of other songwriters' material: Jackie DeShannon's "Come and Stay With Me," The Beatles' "Yesterday," Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "If I Never Get to Love You," for example.

By the time of the release of her 1969 single "Sister Morphine" - co-written with Jagger and Richards, and once again preceding the Rolling Stones version - she had begun to show the depths of her songwriting abilities, but ultimately most listeners would probably consider her first and foremost as an unimpeachable interpreter, a modern equivalent of the jazz singers of the '30s and '40s who would tackle whatever songs caught their ear.

Get it while you still can: Scottish snarlers the Twilight Sad recently released their limited-edition odds-and-sods gather-up Killed My Parents and Hit the Road, and as it turns out, this is much more than just a stopgap until the next album.

Rather, the EP is a fine showcase for the band's formidable abilities in interpreting the work of others, as well as their impressive know-how in ramping up the drama onstage. There are also a couple of previously unreleased tracks that have left fans a-foaming in speculation over whether or not the songs are sneak-previews of what's next for the group. Originally available only at stops on the combo's autumn tour last year, it is now for sale on the label's Web site, www.fat-cat.co.uk. Better snag one soon - or else your only option might be eBay.

Super Ego: Tossed Horse

Is there such a thing as talent? REALLY? Every philosophical question you have about drag gets tossed up and around when the famously scattered yet oddly hypnotic and definitely entertaining House of Salad takes over, as it will this Friday at Charlie Horse, the infamously packed and outlandish punk/rock/grunge/country/??? party hosted by Anna Conda at the Cinch on Polk Street.

I haven't ever been able to assign an aesthetic to the Saladeers -- mostly because there's so many of them, and mostly because no matter what's been planned going in, it all usually ends up pretty fucked up. But this newest House does give off a few pungent qualities: they always defy definition, from queen bee Ambrosia's post-melodramatic take on contemporary dance anthems to Kadija's super-techno and dubstep shakedowns, to Stanley and friends' old-school vaudeville. And they always put on a good show -- even if it's hilariously undercut by a fierce lack of studious stage effects. The girls need to find the spotlight sometime.

Yet of course I adore them, and you never know WHO is gonna pop up in the Salad spinner. Or what "giveaways" they'll be packing. (Hint: little, brown.) Basically it's all about thrown-together deliciousness, so just hold out your bowl and dive in.

It's a meet-up that, admittedly, came as a bit of a surprise, but ultimately makes a world of sense: Detroit retro-futurist funkmeister Joseph "Amp" Fiddler has joined forces with collaboration-loving riddim-machine Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare (better known as Sly and Robbie) for an album's worth of smooth, spaced-out soul and gravy-thick reggae rhythms.

Bestowed with the quite-appropriate moniker Inspiration Information - the title surely a nod to the great fellow traveler of righteous grooves, Shuggie Otis, whose 1974 album of the same name has seen its influence extended further with every passing year - the disc is the first in what is slated to be a series of releases from the consummate tastemakers at Strut Records built around an intriguing concept.

The idea? Take a few musicians who have never worked together before, stick them in the studio on a tight schedule, and see what happens - it's a strategy that yielded fascinating results for the Dutch label Konkurrent, whose "In The Fishtank" series drummed up tasty pairings from Tortoise/the Ex and Low/Dirty Three, for example. I'm dead curious to hear what Strut comes up with next - how about a Tussle/ESG tête-à-tête, folks? - but for now, I'm more than content to float and bob along with the rumbling, churning head-music of this first installment.

In this week's new pop canon spread, I got a chance to hail hosannas upon the late great Lee Hazlewood, whose presence has been quite deeply felt in some of the finest music of 2008. Perhaps the stamp of influence was most deeply inked, however, with Sunday at Devil Dirt, the second collaboration between wispy-piped ingénue Isobel Campbell and croak-baritoned brooder Mark Lanegan.

Here, sad-eyed orchestral pop meets dusty country blues, frequently with dreamlike results - much like Hazlewood's signature showdowns with duet-partner Nancy Sinatra. Pitching Lanegan's growls and grumbles against Campbell's decidedly sweeter murmurs makes for a fascinating update of the Lee 'n' Nancy blueprint, but there's a twist.

Whereas Hazlewood played the Svengali to Sinatra - writing the songs and arrangements and often taking the second seat, vocally speaking, to his partner - here the roles are switched, with Campbell at the helm musically but sticking largely to the second mic in deference to Lanegan's bellowing lead. Having written almost the entirety of the disc, as well as handling all arrangement and production duties, Campbell has worked some spine-tingling trickery from her place in the shadows: Lanegan gets the bigger boom in the mix, yes, but behind the whisper-thin sighs and coos, it is Campbell who is in control.

Super Ego: The mix that made me live

I'm a-freezing my hanukkah latkes off in Detroit right now (-10 wind chill), so maybe it's appropriate, among the blizzard of end-of-year lists, that I pop in my hot mix of the year. All 45 Ghostworld conga-line minutes of Detroit wizard Jeff Mills' triple-table symphonic techno tour de force, "The Exhibitionist."

Before the techno purists claw my ears out, yes this mix came out in late 2k7 -- but I'm on drag time. What really got me about this mind-blowing performance (the sleeve clean at 17:20 made me burst into tears) was how Mills tweaked the massive global rhythms that have always existed subconsciously below fine techno's surface to come up with the kind of polyrhythmy that dubstep can only achieve at its best. Not that it's a competition -- and I was addicted to more dubstep mixes this year than I can count -- but I'm a technoist at heart, and this mix really said something I've been trying to say for years: that machine music possesses a global soul.

I will eternally worship the person who transcribes this for the New York Philharmonic. Or whips out the entire set at Carnaval.

Please, god, no -- not Screamo 2.0

BrokenCYDE: the musical equivalent of chopped fingers and molested children:

When anthropologists encounter bizarre rituals in faraway lands, they don’t pass judgment because it would defeat the purpose of the discipline. They try to remember that every culture has its own set of norms and taboos and that none of these belief systems is any more or less “right” than the next. Think about marriage for a minute. Most Americans insist that the nuclear family is the right way to go, but anthropology has shown us that other lifestyles are just as natural. Some men in India marry an entire line of sisters at the same time, rebellious Mormons may have twenty wives, Hugh Hefner lives in a robe and has sex with triplets half his age, etc.

These situations may seem fucked up to “us,” but you know what? Those people are happy and they get by just fine. Cultural objectivity is necessary because it promotes tolerance (pay attention CA voters!) and it encourages self-analysis. It is the key to enlightenment. Well, the same thing goes with music.

Look, I love all kinds of nightlife -- even zillion-selling sellout nightlife on occasion (yes, I've been to Ibiza) -- and I've championed a lot of dumb music just because it's fun. Ain't nothing wrong with a little fun, and I'm comfortable with being accused of being gushy about absolutely silly things at times.

But I've also spent most of my life trying to convince people that electronic dance music is so much more than lazy, repetitive drivel made for a million blank-minded lockstep androids -- that it can have true soul and experimental meaning, inducing both chills and progress in a subcultural community -- only for many of my arguments to come undone by this horrid bombast:

Super Ego: Work that Lazer Sword

I would seriously follow local turbocrunk duo Lazer Sword to the ends of the earth -- and I just might have to, once they embark on their European Tour in February (come back, come back ...). One of the last times to see them rock the little electronic boxes live will be this Thursday at the fun-filled monthly Work party at UndergroundSF, hosted by the Unicrons crew.

I've had a few small reservations about the Work parties -- they've been popular, and I dig all the local music-making talent they've brought in. Particularly, I'm partial lately to Unicrons members Futuristic Prince, whose jam "Amok Time" has lodged itself in my ears. But the party seemed to follow a kind of tired banger party template, and the promotion has at times seemed a tad desperate. Once they even claimed to be celebrating the release of the new G4 iPhone and The Dark Knight Returns! I hope that was in jest, and I certainly understand that you gotta do what you gotta do to build a party. Twenty Myspace bulletins an hour, though, usually only serves to turn me off. (Can we make that a rule for all club promoters at this late point in the MySpace thingie?)

Give us doom, Pontiak

Calling all lovers of the heavy 'n' the hazy: Virginia-farmboy stoner-rock band Pontiak will be treating the Bay Area to two doses of riffing and roughing up cochleas. First off, the Blue Ridge Mountain brothers storm the Stork Club in Oakland on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Don't feel like trekkin' on over to the East Bay on a school night? The trio will also be playing here in SF, on Sunday, Dec. 14, at the Hemlock Tavern. Two choices, so really there's no excuse.

Hailing from small-town farmlands north of Charlottesville, Pontiak is composed of three brothers: Van (guitar, lead vocals), Lain (drums, vocals), and Jennings Carney (bass, organ, vocals). I don't think anyone in the band would necessarily flinch at the mention of the phrase "power trio": for all of their affinity for murky, sludgy sounds, Pontiak roars away with remarkable precision, pulling off that men-as-machine ethos quite convincingly. Maybe it's a sibling thing?

There is a level of familial intuition that's quite palpable on the recent re-release of their second full-length, Sun on Sun (Thrill Jockey), after all - and while I hardly would expect first-time listeners to mistake any of the disc for Rush, the sheer force with which the threepiece locks into a groove could warrant the comparisons. Instead of touching upon "Tom Sawyer" or "The Temples of Syrinx," however, the disc taps into the doomscapes of Black Sabbath as well as the psychedelia of the Doors.

Super Ego: Hey, I've got Clubfeet

The Guardian's Year in Music issue doesn't come out for a couple weeks, but I'm getting my musical top 10 of 2008 (clubswise) list ready -- check out last year's here -- and I'm pretty sure the loves of my musical life for the past two months will be on it: Clubfeet, a golden trio from Australia, where most great dance-ish music seems to come from. OK, it's not too dance-ish, maybe (although look for the slew of banger remixes to follow), but the tuneful coupling of innocently cynical sentiment with absolutely beautiful production is a marvel that has me skipping around in my undies. Check out Clubfeet's album Gold on Gold (Plant Music -- available on iTunes etc.) and get ready to sing a long ....

Super Ego: New Wave City's sweet 16

Oh, hai, the '80s -- ur doin it rong. Unless you've been hitting up the totally awesome roving monthly New Wave City for the past 16 years, right? I remember when NWC DJs Shindog and Skip were just a twinkle in the '90s eyes -- 1992, wha? -- going against the rave-inundated mainstream and reliving the cozy Morrissey-tinged conundrum that was the '80s: shy neon. Love those children. And take that Calvin Harris fans -- the '80s started again the minute they finished! Lather rinse repeat.

'80s! I'm just gonna write that a thousand million blood- and mascara-stained times.

NWC's planned a massive synthalicious hoedown at DNA Lounge this Saturday, Dec. 6, to blow out their Sixteen Candles with appropriate assymetrical haircut aplomb. Special guest DJs they've fi-Nageled for the occasion: Melting Girl, Donimo, and Andy T. PLUS: an '80s fashion contest to win those fancy new Smiths and New Order deluxe compilations! Super Ego: Cassy takes Kontrol

Clubwise, this is an absoschmutely luverly weekend to catch up on your real house music education. Representing the actual, incredible old school is the Godfather of House (and the sqwonky inventor of acid) himself, Marshall Jefferson, moving your body at the steamy B.O.D.Y.H.E.A.T. party at Elbo Room on Friday, Dec. 5. Marshall recently brought it into the new a little with his smash Mushrooms, remixed by SF's own goofy-minimal darling Justin Martin -- which was nice after what seemed too many years of silence from the master.

But he didn't bring it exactly up to the minute, into the realms of underground German microhouse -- for that, I gaily urge you to hit up one of my most favorite minimal techno clubs, Kontrol at the Endup, to catch perennially poignant Perlon records' Cassy at work this Saturday, Dec. 6.

I still don't know if I believe in microhouse -- which to my fuzzy, broken ears often just sounds like minimal techno with a very few softer sounds and soul samples thrown in. But I get that it's the proud polar opposite of the usual overproduced house bombast, even if it can sometimes lean dangerously close to trance at times, albeit barebones, non-carnival trance. Not that there's anything wrong with trance, but there kind of is.

In any case, Berlin native Cassy's on it with some fierce sets of deep-cutting suavity, and Kontrol's booth will see some much-appreciated female power. Its dance floor, however, will be as dark and fantastic as always. The Berlin invasion continues!

As I enjoyed the tasteful production design of Oasis' Dec. 3 show and wondered just how many trucks they had parked in the lot, Prof. Fluffy turned to me and yelled, "I'm scared of the singer. He looks like he wants to jump off the stage and poke someone in the eye."

Perhaps it was the way the black-shirted Liam Gallagher was holding his tambourine at the opening of their not-quite-sold-out Oracle Arena show - posing like a statue at the front of the stage with the offending instrument between his teeth. He resembled a skinhead terrier.

He had a right to be proud: solid playing from the band - though they seemed a mite disengaged, likely, due to the audience, who were subdued next to their European fans. The majority of the football-like chanting came from the English- and Irish-accented crew behind me. They marveled that they were able to get such good seats so close to the date of the show.

Britpop Faves: Pulp pulverized

When Pulp, the perpetual Britpop outsiders, went into the studio to follow up their first taste of commercial success, the Gold-certified His 'n' Hers (Island, 1994), few would have guessed the unassuming quintet would craft a groundbreaking album that would transcend the Britpop scene, while also creating a recording that was quintessentially British.



While Different Class (PolyGram/Island, 1995) contains the same new wave/glam hybrid of His 'n' Hers, it surpasses their previous effort due to frontperson Jarvis Cocker's development into the most compelling, perceptive figure in rock music at the time. The full-length sees Cocker, a cross between Robert Smith and Morrissey with a keen understanding of sociology, come into his own as a songwriter, weaving tales of sex, drugs, and the rigid, enduring class system that has afflicted England for centuries. Though many UK bands played with the class system (the Verve, the Happy Mondays), none of them investigated it - and rallied against it - like Cocker.

Wild Beasts roar amid a tempestuous rush of ideas

I find myself flirting with hyperbole when I ponder the preening, careening chaos that is Limbo, Panto, the debut from Leeds, England's elegantly lurid Wild Beasts - and I fear I may give in.

Hearing the disc for the first time was a bit of a blindsiding experience, and successive listens have confirmed for me what I'd felt on that initial spin: these guys are clearly out on their own, hurling every idea in their lusty little hearts up against the wall, eager to see which ones stick. Mercifully, nearly every one of the quartet's fits of whimsy does stick - many of them, in fact, do so with spectacular results.

Sounding out on the Silent Comedy's backwoods indie rock

Bowler hats, banjos, backwoods hollers, and burlesque hawkers - sounds like old-timey goodness to me. San Diego's mountain music-loving vaudeville-revivalists the Silent Comedy will be dishing out sepia-toned balladry and carny-shouted hootenannies to the Café du Nord crowd Friday, Nov. 21.

It should be one hell of a rompin'-stompin', suspender-slappin' shindig. Whether or not the band will share their homebrewed bathtub-gin onstage remains to be seen, but they're certain to be generous with everything else you might need for a round or two of Prohibition-era revelry. OK, the bathtub-gin thing is pure speculation on my part; what else could possibly be fueling their deliciously unbridled rip-ups?

The quintet, formed in 2005 by brothers J. John and J. Benjamin from the remnants of their San Diego post-punk band Dehra Dun, is rooted in acoustic-based roots music - banjo, mandolin, and violin figure prominently - but indie rock has clearly played a significant role in shaping how they approach country and folk idioms.

Another punk: Love Is All has a lot of feelings

It would be hard to take someone seriously if they told you they were addicted to music. The notion of addiction might have more purchase for books or movies, but listening to music compulsively seems like a given for this generation. Music "helps" - in the broadest sense of that word: it can be restorative or push you into productive discomfort, and can help articulate feelings that might not get very far on language alone.

It’s easy to listen to Love Is All’s new album, A Hundred Things Keep Me up at Night (What’s Your Rupture), like water, two times a day easy, on the bus trying to calm down. With each listen, the disc becomes less like a collection of songs and more like a collection of vignettes, ones that seem to capture something important about what it feels like to be in the midst of your second adolescence.

Vocalist Josephine Olausson knows how to throw a good tantrum, but even amid the more blown-out sentiments of “Give It Back,” her delivery is so much more than merely spiteful as she delivers the lines: “All the love I gave you, give it back / Every time I praised you, I’m keeping track / Every minute on the phone / It was only cos I felt so alone.”

Hair they come: Natalie Portman's Shaved Head

You can’t help but love Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head based on the sheer genius of their name. When I first read of NPSH last spring in Dazed and Confused, I knew I had to hear them. Thankfully the band's sound is as fun as its name.

The group - composed of four June babies, Luke Smith, Shaun Libman, David Price, Liam Downey Jr., and Claire England - released their self-released debut, Glistening Pleasures, this summer. But they’ve been performing and developing a following since 2005.

I talked with England via phone about NPSH’s evolution. “I set up the first show for these guys before I was even in the band” she said. The combo’s first performance was for 826 Seattle.

Jet-setting with Jeremy Jay

LA's Jeremy Jay has been preparing for his San Francisco performance at the Rickshaw Stop this Thursday, Nov. 6, by relaxing in Paris.

After his European Tour, Jay decided to stay a little bit longer in what he calls “one of the best cities in the world.” He was in the City of Light when we spoke by phone. “I will be also living in Paris starting Jan. 1," he said. "I already have a flat here, too. I love it here in Paris.” This month he reluctantly returns to the States to perform for his American fan base.

Jay’s deep voice perfectly accents the slow rhythms of his music. He sings of slow dancing, wearing blue fur coats in Aspen, and heavenly creatures who cast “their tracks in wet cement ground.” "Slow Dance" is Jay’s personal favorite off his new LP, which comes out in March ’09. The tune could totally fit into The Labyrinth: Jay’s dramatic singing wafts alongside '80s-vibe piano scales. The tune is ultra-mystical.

Let Toumani Diabaté's kora music reign

Like the pitter-patter of raindrops heard above, as they strike the roof, and below, as they fall into puddles outside of the comfortable protection of your apartment, on a typical gray day in San Francisco, Toumani Diabaté’s kora playing on his February release, The Mandé Variations (Nonesuch), creeps and seeps inside, infecting you with its melancholy minor key and uneven intervals while surrounding you with the cozy pleasure of your insulated bedroom and warm flannel sheets.

The kora is a 21-string West African instrument often characterized as what the offspring of a harp and lute might look like. But this depiction dismisses detailing much of the magic and charm of the instrument, which is perhaps beyond description and can be best felt in listening to the mesmerizing stories the instrument tells.

The kora is built from a large calabash, cut in half and covered with cow skin forming a resonator, and it has a notched bridge like a lute. Diabaté uses one thumb to pluck the bassline, while the other plays the core melody, and the two forefingers are for improvisation. The remaining fingers are used to hold the sticks on either side of the strings and to secure the instrument.

Dance, dance, dance with Lykke Li - and mixed emotions

Watching Lykke Li bounce her nimble, lithe body, holding her hand to her head, as she warms up before screaming into a megaphone in the “Breaking It Up (Alternate Take)” video reminds me of a simple fact: sex sells. Better yet, cute Swedish girls who exude sexuality sell.

A standard formula we all know, but these days it has got a twist: GAWS majors and hipster boys wearing their sister’s pants reflect a shift in the standard norms of sex stars from the typical Paris Hilton and Christina Aguilera wannabes, and the spectrum has been widened to less conventional icons like Maggie Gyllenhaal and Swedish pop sensation Lykke Li.

Lykke Li dances with a lot of hopping and arm flinging, which makes her resemble a sexier, less crazed, but still spastic Ian Curtis. She stares into the camera as if she’s looking at you, drops her eyes, and even though she’s breaking up with you, you’re already addicted by the time the catchy hook comes.
