star.gif Porno for peggers...and everyone else

By Amber Peckham

All dressed up with nowhere to go? Not anymore. Dig those funkalicious duds and worn-out sex toys out of your attic (you know they’re up there) and head over to Oakland’s Parkway Theater tonight, where Babeland is holding a screening of the erotic film The Opening of Misty Beethoven. The screening kicks off with a “Sexy 70’s” costume contest, where three lucky winners will receive $30 Babeland gift cards, and the film will be followed by a raffle in which three more filmgoers will receive Babeland Body Kits.

Babeland is one of the nation’s most well-reviewed sex shops, with its New York stores receiving Zagat ratings for “Top Service” in 2003 and 2006. While they don’t have a store closer than LA, their warehouse is located in Oakland, and they are working on having a stronger Bay Area presence.

“We’re going to start holding workshops, and we’re participating in Folsom [Street Fair],” said Mae Schultz, Babeland’s marketing coordinator. “And we really hope to hold more film screenings; we love working with the Parkway. Lots of us usually walk over there after work, so we kind of have a relationship with them.”

From such a quality establishment, one expects a quality film, and Misty does not disappoint. Released in 1975, it received the Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Film awards from the Adult Film Association of America. The movie is an elaborate satire based directly on the Pygmalion legend (think My Fair Lady), and is the first widely-released pornography to feature pegging, or female-on-male anal sex using a strap on. The film also ran in adult theaters for over seven years, and is probably the only porn in history to be remade into a musical. What better way to spend your Thursday night?

When asked about the selection process for the film, Schultz said, “Well, we had a few ideas floating around, and we knew we wanted a classic. But it mainly got selected because it was a big favorite of mine, and so I was pretty adamant.”

Sadly for yours underaged truly, the event is only open to 21 and older, as the Parkway Theater serves alcohol, so looks like me and my costume will have to stay at home. Take a shot for me, won’t you? Make it that money one I’ve been hearing so much about.

Thursday, Sep. 27. 9:15pm. $6.
