Opera is kind of like really kinky sex; some people are afraid to try it because they don’t think they’ll like it, but almost everyone who tries it loves it. If you’ve been hesitating to have your first experience (we’re talking opera now, not sex; you can figure the sex out on your own) tonight’s the perfect opportunity to ease yourself into the opera scene.
For $25, tonight San Francisco State University hosts its second annual Opera Gala, where patrons will enjoy highlights from popular operas performed by current students and alumni of the university’s renowned vocal and opera program.

And as if the sounds and sights wouldn’t be enough to tempt, there will also be dessert and wines available thanks to the generous donations of local businesses like Ambrosia Bakery, Zanze's Cheesecakes, Sunset Bakery, Trader Joe's, Yasukochi's Sweet Shop, and Mumm Napa Valley. The desserts will be served “cabaret style”, with audience members seated at round tables and servers bringing them the desserts. There will also be a buffet for the more independent viewer, but the overall goal is to increase the intimate feel from last year’s event, which was concert style.
“It was kind of a different event last year,” said Jaime Galli, who is both the administrative coordinator for the vent and a graduating senior from the program. “The basics are the same; it’s still a showcase of the talents of the school, but we wanted it to feel more intimate.”
When asked about the inspiration for the event, Galli said it was a collaborative effort between herself and opera program director Alissa Deeter to get the gala off the ground.
“As a state school we’re always looking for ways to both raise money and involve our community in our academic life. This seemed like the best way to do both, especially since lots of our donations come from community bakeries and wineries, so we’re getting to advertise for them.”
